My husband is upset because a friend told him that it is going to cost him $800 or more to make corrections to his passport he was going to go to Abuja this week but now he is not sure if he should just go we didnt think it would be more than around $300 top,. they told him due to high fraud they are charging more to make corrections to discourge scammers that have been turned down for a visa from trying to apply again with a new passport and that it is $800 or higher. has anybody heard this or no where on line we can find the info on how much it will cost. Thanks for your help.

Even if he can get it done, $800 is cheaper than the $875 that we paid and she had to go to Abuja.

Is it right, is it proper, was I scammed? The answer is an individual choice but I just want to get my baby out of there so that we can get on with our lives. I consider it as part of the total cost of immigration. 50 years from now when yah all are rocking on the porch watching the Grand kids play, will you remember that money? Focus on the long term goal.

Additionally, don't get discouraged by those that are confusing renewals/reissues with corrections. They are different animals and the cost varies.

IMHO, the important thing is not the money (deduct that from your Fiance side of the monthly hobby spending), but to make sure that this is only a one time deal and that he gets a genuine passport.

One more thing, be wary of advice on the web, including mine. Even though most mean well and their posts may come from a well meaning place, but remember that there is a preset suspicion on Nigerians at large, especially on VJ.

Good luck to you Guys and please tell him to be careful on the trip to Abuja. I was more frantic about the dangers of the trip more than the money actually.

I agree with you.... She needs to check her husband out... Cos even for him to tell her that it cost $800... to me that sounds more like he's trying to get money off her... He's a Nigerian and am sure he knows better

Hey Guys, I wonder when y'all will stop poking into other peoples mess. We have given the lady appropriate advise. It is left for to take it or leave it. Do not help her end a relationship here. By the way, whats the issue with the fact the "he is Nigerian" as if Ghanians are not guilty of fraud as well. When you come to a forum, such as this please learn not to generalize. cos i am Nigeria too.

Listen and Listen well. I had to make corrections on my e-passport just this last May 2012 because of a silly mistake an immigration officer did on my passport. instead of inputting 16 on my birthdate, he inputted 06. in short . I had to travel to Abuja for a reissue. it cost me close to 45 thousand naira. I am not trying to scare you. l currently stay in Nigeria and what i am telling you in the real truth. you might be able to haggle and bargain for something less but I am ####### sure it can never be less than 20k Naira and your spouse must be ready to submit the old one with evidences to prove that the error is not a fault of his. it is not like the bussiness as usual thing again. i hope I have not scared you in anyway. Have a great Day.

I am beginning to get a clearer picture here. I have been living in the UK for over half a decade, so i don't know how the system works in totality. But going through all the comments by all faithful VJ members, i can conclude that there is an element of truth in the guys estimate. 800 dollars is less that N100,000. Fights to Abuja could cost about N 40k to N50k return. If doing the renewal costs 45k or even 25k, then i guess the 800 dollars estimate might be genuine..

$800 = ~N125,000.

Night bus from Ibadan to Abuja and back is N15,000, I encouraged my Fiancee to NOT fly on local flights.

You can get a passport for the listed price on the immigration websites but will take weeks, even months and you have to wait for your name to be called, so you can stay there for 3 whole days and your name is not called.

Hence the touts who are the immigration officers themselves will "assist". I paid N35,000 for a renewal and received it the next day since time is money to me.

Nigeria is a complicated place. The best thing is for OPs Fiance to get on the bus/train/plane go to Abuja, go to the passport office and ask directly.

That goes to show that tares are being sown among the wheats...I have to know that liers impersonate the truth lol... Likewise, I am beginning to establish the honest intent of the young man...though that's non of my business in the first place...like someone had rightly said here, I was thinking about obtaining a new passport was what the issue is...I honestly did not know about passport correction and stuffs like that...I am glad my prayer is being answered and our sister on vj is blessed with an honest man...what I hate most without blinking, is deceit and cheat... To the OP may you find useful info about your request and may God see you guys through...all will be well with you in Jesus name, amen!

To get a reissue just like before is very impossible unless you can check your fingerprint which is used in activating all issuance. The machine will search it's database for existing data thus Abuja is the only solution to reissue and the guys there takes advantage of this

People sure did jump to the scam theory with minimal information... All Nigerians Shoul know Nigerians are opinionated and when someone is doing something everyone wants chime in with some type of information on how it should be done. So just because the friends think its $800 doesn't mean that is what the real amount is. How many times have some of you asked a question on this forum alone and our fellow Nigerian come here and act like their opinion is the fact. My fiance has been getting all sorts of advice from everyone obi and Ada Nigeria has to offer about what he should do in this process or what he shouldnt do. As if they have been through it before! One of them was even giving him pointers on how to talk during his interview. If he was trying to scam her anyway $800 is a small amount to be scamming someone out of, cause he would still need to use the money to travel to Abuja and pay for the new passport. So if you calculate the cost from that alone, he wouldnt be making any profit. OP I dont think from the sounds of it his friends are scamming him or he is scamming you. Nigerians just like to act like their opinions are facts. Just make sure he is doing everything on his own and not to listen to people too much. You also have access to the internet so you can be doing research on things, so there is really no need for you both to not be aware and informed on what is going on.

Sounds like a big scam to me? I wonder how much a new passport costs? Not more than $300. I got mine from Nigerian embassy here in London for less than 150 pounds. He needs to go to the passport office himself, insteas of relying on friends. Especially when they know his wife is from "Yankee", as they call it in Nigeria.

Wow! Why do passports cost so much everywhere else? I just renewed mine and it cost about $90 Canadian.

in the UK, when getting a new passport or renewing an old one, it can be quite expensive. You are required to make 2 payments, one on the official website and the remaining when you fo to the embassy. Immigration is big business,i might consider venturing into this line of business.
