Can I be paid for an internship?

Hey guys,

I am currently on a student visa and will be graduating in December. I will be doing an internship this semester which has to be completed for my major. I am currently enrolled in the internship. My question is can I be paid for it? Also it is an 120 hour internship but I plan on putting in more hours for the experience, can I only be paid for the 120 hours?

I asked her and she said it would be fine but she would need to make me a new I-20. Just wondering if anyone had any knowledge on it or if they had done it themselves.

I suspect your new I120 will also be the start of your OPT. You cannot work off campus without an EAD.

Exactly she will need to make a new I-20 as it would start CPT/OPT - as CW said without EAD you cannot work off campus.

Thats the exact reason why I had asked you to check with your international advisior - as far as I was aware most programs would have internship as optional and not mandatory as international students cannot take such classes.

I got a new I-20 and it has CPT employment on the last page. This internship is mandatory for my major, i cannot graduate without putting in 120 hours of field work.

yes, you can be paid during your internship. I have worked the last two summers full-time with CPT.

Yea that sounds right as mentioned in earlier post you need either one of them and most majors are designed in such a way that training is optional as they run into these issues all the time.
