Do you think the Hussein family were good leaders?

It was better than the chaos that's there now - and Iraqis agree.

90% of Iraqis say they were better off under Saddam Hussein

Do you have a newer one ?

I have some older stats. In 1995 99.96% of Iraqis voted for Hussein. This was an incredible outpour of support. But then in 2002 his support grew. 100% of eligible Iraqis voted for Hussein.

"On October 16, 2002, after a well-publicized show election, Iraqi officials declared that Saddam had been re-elected to another seven-year term as President by a 100% unanimous vote of all 11,445,638 eligible Iraqis, eclipsing the 99.96% received in 1995. Outside governments dismissed the vote as lacking credibility."

So in other words, no, you don't have a newer poll (post-invasion.)

So in other words, no, you don't have a newer poll (post-invasion.)

From 2007

The poll, the biggest since coalition troops invaded Iraq on March 20, 2003, indicates that by a majority of two to one, Iraqis prefer the current leadership to Saddam Hussein's regime despite the collapse of security and lack of public services.

2007:

No matter how cruel and despotic Saddam Hussein's regime was it kept the lid on any sectarian violence, said one Iraqi Catholic refugee in Jordan, who asked that his name not be used. He said Saddam, a secular leader, was especially good for Christians, as long as they stayed out of the way. "Saddam [controlled] everything. Nobody could say anything bad especially [about] us Christians," he said. "Christians in the Middle East are very good people. We are peace-loving people."

Another refugee said that after years of living in fear and daily bombings many Iraqi Christians felt they were actually safer with Saddam. "We are getting tired. When Saddam was in power there was no fighting. Saddam loved the Christians. We were safer with Saddam; now we just leave the country," he said.

Life was better under Saddam, say Christian refugees

2009:

"Yes," responded No. 1. "It breaks my heart knowing that, because it was so bad, but now, they feel it's worse, and they just wish that Saddam's regime could come back."

A young man, who will be called No. 3, added: "A lot of people want, well, 'We just want Saddam come back. We don't want to live this life. OK, dictator? We don't care; doesn't matter anymore. We just want Saddam get back. We just want our life to get back to before.' "

2009:

All the LGBT Iraqis interviewed for Gay Life After Saddam maintained that life was easier for them when Saddam Hussein was in power, from 1979 to 2003.

Saddam's rule 'better' for gay Iraqis

2010:

Women in Iraq had it better under Saddam Hussein

"The U.S. occupation has decided to let go of women's rights," Yanar Mohammed who campaigns for women's rights in Iraq says. "Political Islamic groups have taken southern Iraq, are fully in power there, and are using the financial support of Iran to recruit troops and allies. The financial and political support from Iran is why the Iraqis in the south accept this, not because the Iraqi people want Islamic law."

With the new law has come the new lawlessness. Nora Hamaid, 30, a graduate from Baghdad University, has now given up the career she dreamt of. "I completed my studies before the invaders arrived because there was good security and I could freely go to university," Hamaid tells IPS. Now she says she cannot even move around freely, and worries for her children every day. "I mean every day, from when they depart to when they return from school, for fear of abductions."

There is 25 percent representation for women in parliament, but Sabria says "these women from party lists stand up to defend their party in the parliament, not for women's rights." For women in Iraq, the invasion is not over.

The situation for Iraq's women reflects the overall situation: everyone is affected by lack of security and lack of infrastructure.

"The status of women here is linked to the general situation," Maha Sabria, professor of political science at Al-Nahrain University in Baghdad tells IPS. "The violation of women's rights was part of the violation of the rights of all Iraqis." But, she said, "women bear a double burden under occupation because we have lost a lot of freedom because of it.

"More men are now under the weight of detention, so now women bear the entire burden of the family and are obliged to provide full support to the families and children. At the same time women do not have freedom of movement because of the deteriorated security conditions and because of abductions of women and children by criminal gangs."

Women, she says, are also now under pressure to marry young in family hope that a husband will bring security.

Sabria tells IPS that the abduction of women "did not exist prior to the occupation. We find that women lost their right to learn and their right to a free and normal life, so Iraqi women are struggling with oppression and denial of all their rights, more than ever before."

There was no insurgency before GWB wrecked the country, and you know it. It was a stupid, senseless war that has created a nightmare.

"Created" a nightmare??? What was it before? There was that 8 year war with Iran that cost 500,000 lives, the invasion of Kuwait... oh and they used chemical weapons to kill a few thousand Kurds.. and who can forget when Saddams sons decided to torture the countries Olympics athletes? NY Times Article The torture and subjugation storys of the population from 1980 on up could go on and on and on for pages...

Stupid and senseless? Yes.. Wrecked the country?? C'mon..

I don't believe it.. Prove it to me and I still won't believe it. -Ford Prefect

The U.S., under the leadership of the sainted Ronald Reagan, not only collaborated with Saddam Hussein in the Iran-Iraq war, but armed him with chemical weapons and turned a blind eye to the use of those weapons against the Kurds.

Later of course, under GWB, the U.S. cited the very same attacks it had funded against the Kurds as one of its excuses for war.
