Quickest Method for New Immigrant to get SSN

  1. 1. Which method is quicker in getting the SSN?

    • Getting in person at a Social Security Administration office.
      1
    • Checking off under 43a of the DS-230 form that you would like SSA to issue you a card and number.

I've read the Step-by-Step Guide to getting a Social Security Number (SSN). I've also read the Department of State Webpage where it states that the social security card is usually received about 6 weeks after you enter the USA as a permanent resident. This is problematic for me, as I wish to start working ASAP after moving to the US. While starting work within a week or two may not be possible, I would like to know the opinion of others as to which method they think is quicker.

Also, if you have already applied and received your SSN card, please mention which method you used and how long it took to receive the card. This way, after about 30 - 50 answers I should have a good idea as to which method is quicker.

I have a hunch that the quickest method will be in person, but please correct me if my hunch is wrong.

I was considering that, actually. I just wasn't sure if I could go to the border to enter as an immigrant, and then go back to Canada immediately to finish up my work here.

Yes, you can. The stamp in your passport serves as the GC until the actual card is produced and mailed.
