We picked out names early on. Mehdi for a boy (still working on that middle name) and Violeta Safae for a girl. We also wanted to name a daughter after both our mothers, Aleta Mimouna :luv:

Thanks for answering my Q's everyone. I agree that it is fascinating to name your child a unique or ethnic name. I just was surprised that there was not one western name listed when I wrote my post. :)

I have wanted to name my first son Thackery since I was in elementary school. (Can you name the movie it comes from?) So my husband and I compromised and picked a name that is like it, yet was also part arabic and part western. Zachariah was the name. The first time I heard it I said, that's what our first son will be named. And he will most likely go by Zach growing up. Now as for a girls name, I never really thought about it. But one night we were talking about names and he was going through some bizarre names. Finally he said Runya and I was like, I like that. So our first girl will be name Runya Marie. She has to carry the family tradition of the first girl, so her middle name will have to be Marie. See... I can think for myself too! But I do find myself hearing more and more arabic names and loving them.

Even though we don't have kids yet, we have thought of names for when we do

Girls:

Cecilia

Celia

Caitlin (Cait or Kate for short)

Adrianna (my hubby chose this name)

Elise (maybe)

Amelia ( mia as a nickname)

If our first child is a girl then I though maybe use my hubby's first name as her middle name but my hubby is like maybe we should give her an american middle name. So we are in a debate abt this.

Boy names

Matthew

Daniel

Ryan

As for the boys they would definitely have my hubby's first name as his middle name.

There are more names I keep coming up with so we will have to see

when i was pregnant with my son, I came up with Lyric Hope for a girl and I have stuck with it ever since. I am not sure what the arabic meaning for lyric is ..but amal is the meaning of hope.. so maybe it will be lyric amal ...

as far as most of us using names outside western names...I, personally, am tired of western names. I grew up with a very very very rare name and I want my kids to have rare names as well. It helps to get a better sense of self when nobody else in your class has your name. I am happy to give my child an arabian name since it will be different here in the USA but my husband will feel comfortable with it :)

I haven't heard too many names that i really like yet.....

hmm..as i sit here thinking...maybe aidoun would be a good name for a boy??.... hehehe  dunno where that came from  ..

Noor , of course wants to name the girl Mariam after his mama but every time I hear that name, I think of an old old old lady in her rocking chair on her porch knitting a sweater....I just can't do that to my kid... we'll see what happens

I think it's interesting that there aren't any western names picked by anyone who responded so far, even when one half of the couple is American. Why not? I know in some cases, if you both share the culture already that would be why...but why for those who did not originally share the culture?

I like many Indian names for babies, but I have some Western names in mind as well. I'd like, if we had 2 children in the future, that one has an Indian name and one has a Western name, and with the opposite as a middle name. I'm leaning more towards a baby girl having a name like Maria, or Rosa...(yes I'm part Italian hehe). But we'll see! There are many pretty Indian names for girls too, though we don't want anything that has a strictly Hindu meaning. But I definitely want them to have both cultures represented somehow.

For me I simply find them exotic.

It was so difficult picking names with my ex, he hated everything I came up with. By the time my last was born I just picked a name that was popular at the time, I was tired of fighting about it.

One of my friends here wanted to name their child Fatimah, and call them fatty for short. I advised them against this for obvious reasons.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

Well since we are T minus 10 weeks to go we have a name. We had four - Tarik, Amin, Amir, and Ayman all with the middle name Ibrahim (Youssef's deceased father's name). However when he asked his mom she said she really liked the name Khalil so we have decided to go with that one. Our sons name will be Khalil Ibrahim. If we were to have a girl her name would have been Kenza Jolie. It is important for my husband for our child to have an Arabic/Islamic name and I am fine by that. I also want a different name for our child - my name is Amanda and there were like 15 other Amanda's I went to school with. My first son's name is Mikhail Alexander so I guess I'm about ethnic/different names.

Most of the Arabs in my family have French names instead of Arab names. That seems to be an upper class practice in some parts of the Arab world. I don't believe there are Islamic names; most of the early Muslims were pagans when they got the names we call "Islamic" today.

Some of the names we've picked are after important people in Islamic history and others are family names.. his family.

One of the names I love for girls is Rose. For boys there's a few names I like including Jonathan and Michael (maybe boring but I like them), but only in their long forms. I wouldn't name my kid Mike or John. My fiance and I have talked about it and we decided like some here that the names of any future children we had would be part Arabic and part Western.

When I was pregnant with my son, my ex-husband wanted to name him Ford. After the car.

There was only one name we could finally agree on, and it turns out to be one of the most popular names around, so my son always has other kids with his same name in class or sports.

Allah tries his chosen people through many hardships, but those who persevere through adversity, surrendering themselves before the will of Allah, shall be blessed with a superb reward.

-The Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as reported by Anas bin Malik

A time will come when the sky is torn apart; when the stars scatter, and the ocean drains away; and when the graves are tossed about, and laid open. At that time every man will be told what he has done, and what he has failed to do; and every woman will be told what she has done, and what she has failed to do.

-Qur'an, Al-Infitar, Surah 82:1-5

I named my oldest son Michael after his father - he's a junior. For the second one, we wanted something more exotic so I chose Jaxom from a science fiction book we were reading, and Navarre from the movie Ladyhawke which was out not long before he came along. I didn't realize what I had done until they were older and I was on the porch yelling for them to come in "Michael! , Jaxom!" My neighbors thought I was crazy. I learned to say their names in reverse order to at least save some embarrassment.

Abdel and I have talked about baby names, but so far we've only found a couple - Noumidia for a girl and another girl name I can't remember any more but we both loved.

He really wants a girl since I already have two boys, but I guess we'll get what we get, if we get anything. By the time I graduate we may be too old and tired to even think about having a baby.
