You all have a good list of names. My SIL suggested Amira for our daughter just to give us something to think about and it stuck. My DH wanted to name her Fatima(his grandmother's name), but I just thought that kids can be so mean and make fun of the "fat" in her name, so that was scrapped. I picked the arabic version of Jasmine --Yassmine for her middle name.

I think it's interesting that there aren't any western names picked by anyone who responded so far, even when one half of the couple is American. Why not? I know in some cases, if you both share the culture already that would be why...but why for those who did not originally share the culture?

I like many Indian names for babies, but I have some Western names in mind as well. I'd like, if we had 2 children in the future, that one has an Indian name and one has a Western name, and with the opposite as a middle name. I'm leaning more towards a baby girl having a name like Maria, or Rosa...(yes I'm part Italian hehe). But we'll see! There are many pretty Indian names for girls too, though we don't want anything that has a strictly Hindu meaning. But I definitely want them to have both cultures represented somehow.

Married since 9-18-04(All K1 visa & GC details in timeline.)

Since I am pregnant and inshallah the baby will be here in less than 5 months yes we do have names picked out :

Girl : Hana, Hanna, or Hannah (Hahahahaha we have not agreed on spelling can you tell ?? It's our biggest problem right now. On Wednesday we will find out if it's a boy or girl and if it's a girl we are in trouble)

Boy : Ahmed or Ahmad (same problem as above but it will most likely be Ahmed)

Now baby #2 is a whole other story cuz we seriously have no clue.

Reunited and it feels so good ....

NOA #1 - March 23rd, 2004

Interview- May 18th, 2006 (Success !)

Arrived in the US - May 27, 2006 (our IR-1 visa journey was 2 years and 2 months long)

Wedding - June 17th, 2006

It's a Girl ! Baby Hana's expected due date - March 30th, 2007

Well if thats what people have agreed on then so be it. I noticed the same thing but didn't quite get to your conclusion. Now that you have brought it up I think you have made a valid point. I think alot of it comes down to facination and pleasing your partner. I would not be opposed to having a western name but my fiance is. I am also not opposed to having arabic names but he really wants them. Seeing that I could go either way as long as I like the name, we are going with arabic names because its important to him. Most arab names end up getting translated into english names anyway.

I also think it would be nice to incorporate both cultures in naming my children. Ideally, I would like to choose an arabic first name and a "western" middle name.. maybe a family name or just a name I happen to like.

I like Leila/Layla/Leala (haven't decided which spelling yet... :D ) and a middle name like Elizabeth for a girl. It's my real name and I never got a chance to use it. I also like Leah, Ryma, and Hannah.

For boys I like Amine...................... hmm, I guess I haven't really though of boy names!!

I wanted a Japanese middle name, but my husband preferred Arabic or English. Since her first name was Arabic, I thought I'd keep it in the family. Note: Most cultures don't use middle names and my husband was agreeable to fit in with American culture.

While the names we have picked are arabic words, we specificaly chose Islamic concepts, as opposed to traditional "arab" names. They're also names that can be shortened to something more american - Jay and Mo.

At least for me, I'm happy to pick names that are unusual in both the ME and in America. That way, my kids won't be put in the position of being Jenny 1, Jenny 2, Jenny 3, Jenny 4 or Jenny 5 while going through school like I was

Peter Alexander for a boy (Peter after my dad, Alexander because we both like it)

Dorthea Rose for a girl (Dorthea means gift from God in Greek and Rose because that's the symbol I prayed for when I asked God to show me the sign of the rose when I meet the right man. My fiance showed me a picture of a rose on his cell phone when he first asked for my phone number. And it's my Great Aunt's name).
