Men who live as women can now legally use women's rest rooms in New York's transit system under an unprecedented deal revealed yesterday.

"I would not like that," said Gloria David, a retiree from Connecticut. "I have nothing against gay men or drag queens, but they can use the men's room. I just don't want to go to the bathroom next to a man."

One rider feared predators might dress as women and lurk in the women's room.

But Rena Gantz, 23, a college student, shrugged off the settlement.

"It doesn't bother me because it is a reality," she said. "If they believe they are women, they should be treated as one."

Why does that person immediately assume that a man "who lives as a woman" is gay or a drag queen? I've never understood why so many people have such a difficult time with the concept of a transgendered person.

Part of preparing for a sex-change operation is to live as the other sex for a period of time. This would include using the restrooms of the other sex. Why should women feel threatened if a man - who wants to/will soon be a woman - is in the restroom with them?

I think it's a good idea. There are quite a few transgendered people roaming around out there, this will just make it a little easier for them.

Well i would think it's kinda good idea but then it opens up for the predator to do what they want easier then before... umm.. I dont know... I dont mind a sex-change persont though.. i know somebody who did too.

Maybe they should have medical personnel "checking" all women to make sure they're either born female or have had a sex change

I find USA's public bath room very scary.. the space btw the floor and the door is so high.. the gap is so wide i can see the face of the person waiting outside!! and u can really see what the people is doing in the bathroom too i freaked out alot everytime somebody just walk pass while i do my business.. lol.. now i'm kinda used to it

This seems the better of the two possibilities. There were always be people uncomfortable, but I imagine that there would be fewer women disturbed by a transgendered female in the ladies' room than men disturbed by a transgendered female in the mens' room.

But what about transgendered males?
