Opening Joint Savings Account With Fiance

Hi Everyone

I am travelling out on the 25th Dec to spend 2 weeks with the future wife.

We are planning on opening a Joint Savings Account and I have a question.

I am planning on taking a chunk of my savings with me to put into the account.

However i am worried that by bringing a considerable amount of money with me ( $5k) the CBP officer will immediately assume i am planning on staying and refuse me entry.

I am taking a letter from my employer to state my return to work date and also a copy of the lease agreement for my car which states the date the length of the agreement.

Can anyone advise on any other advice.

Cheers

Rich

If you bring $5k than you should be ok. If questioned you can always tell the truth and let officer know some of the money u will be leaving in your joint account.

I think it depends on the bank. I didn't need an SSN to be added to my husband's account with Bank of America.

You need a SSN to open a joint account! Or else it's impossible to make a joint account! Better yet, you could just leave you're money in an account you have at home, and use a card to withdraw funds out from here...

By law a person does not need an SSN to open a bank account. Some banks do require it though. Most of the time a bank employee will tell you that you need an SSN simply because they don't know any better, if you ask the employee to check with the manager usually they will find out that you don't need an SSN. It's easy enough to find a bank that doesn't require an SSN, just keep looking til you do.

I didn't need a SSN when my husband and I opened joint accounts with Bank of America. I had to provide them with my SSN when I got it, however. The OP already has a SSN so that won't be a problem. Bringing in $5,000 won't be an issue. You have to declare any amount of $10,000 or greater that you are transporting or arranging to be transported - there is a special form for that. Also, be aware, that when you move to the US you also have to disclose any foreign accounts that have more than $10,000 in them. You don't have to pay tax on it, but the US government wants to know about it as part of their anti-terrorism activities. There is a special form for that as well.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
