My husband has been here 7 months now. We are applying for his brother to come here on a student visa, We will pay for everything including his education. From what ive been going though this seems so easy. Everyone i talk to in the college say just to get transcripts translated and they will issue an 1-20. Has anyone done this. I know he has to go to the consulate in Morocco for and interview is that where we are going to run into trouble?. I really want to hear stories from someone who has done this and let me know if this is as a simple process as it seems. He should start in January of 2007 and the school says it is very possible.

A F1 requires you to show non immigrant intent.

May also require AP/AR from Morrocco, do not know, the Uni should.

caregiver4ever,

Boiler is correct. You might want to stay out of this, or at least stay far in the background, and let the brother take care of his visa himself with the university's help. ("We" are not applying in any case, he is.)

Your brother-in-law will need to apply for admission to universities in US. Depending on the university and the program will determine the documentation required. These are generally school transcripts, application forms, SATs or GMAT, GRE plus TOEFL. The university will then decided if to grant admission or not.

You have to keep in mind that Feb is usually the application deadline in most cases especially in international admissions. If he is trying for Spring 07, I think its a little too late for that. You can probably confirm.

You may want to avoid community colleges and trade schools as those tend to be easy to get an I20 for but are difficult to get a visa for.

Last thing is the money. Before you decide to pay for 'everything including education', bear in mind that the current cost of 12 hr tution (excluding room and board) for international students is running at $6500 per semester in TX at 4 yr universities. You will need to demonstrate that you have supplemental income to support them.

$18000 (your poverty line) + $18000 (student tution) per year = $36000 min income.

bear in mind that USCIS will want your income to be greater than $50000 for you to be able to sponsor them.

He would need to demonstrate that he has the funds or access to the funds to pay for his tuition and living expenses.

$6,500 per semester seems low to me, I have a step son who has In State fees and we are not far off that! Plus all the add ons, books etc. I try not to add it up, hurts too much, but only one semester to go!

I know its over 4 thousand per semester including insurance. What u said about getting a visa for community college is my concern too. I cannot afford a university. From what the community college says it will be easy to do as far as this side. I have asked many people whom Ive talked to at different times with the same question"is this easy to do?" They all say yes it is. I even talked to the head of the student visa department and he said on the application I dont need pay stubs or bank statements just to write combined income on the support paper and that should be good enough. The problem for me is what is casa is going to ask for. I dont know if I have to proove support?(that wouldnt be a problem but getting everything together in such a short time is what scares me). I dont know what he has to proove to casa? The deadline is november sometime to apply and from what the school says i can do it easy. I find them to be very calm about this process. Almost routine? That also scares me haha. When I brought my husband here I thought it was going to be a big process(which alot of paperwork) but from time to apply till he got his visa was only 2 and a half months so maybe this will go smooth too. Thanks for your advice.

Well in his case, a good idea will be to purse Univ. Many scholarships are available to univ students compared with community college. Community college admissions are easy but the issue comes at time of visa. As they dont have a degree plan , most students find it very difficult to make the case that the same courses are not availabe in the home country and that they are working towards a degree (which they are not in a community college).

One denied visa application means 6 mth wait before reapplying. Univ I-20 is far stronger than community college. You should consider that.

You need to fill out an affidavit of support. It will have instructions for supporting documents.

Would not the sum you can afford pay for a much much better education is his own country.

What benefits does the course he wishes to take in the US have?

I agree. Only graduate education is worth the money in US for internation students. Psychology 101 and philosophy 102 at community college is not the worth the whopping thousands.

I think his intent here is basically move to the US much less education.

Which may well be the presumption of the Consulate.

If you have immigrant intent, you can still get an F-1. They will not turn someone down just for that reason. However.......what is probably certain, is that the consulate will be so skeptical that this person who has relatives here in the USA will come back after his education, I think the brother will have a VERY hard time getting one. Also, getting an F-1 in certain countries may be eaiser than others.

I have to agree with what everyone is saying about the "community college". For them to give an F-1 in this case, given all the cirumstances and ties he has to this country, for a community college education......I just think the chances are getting harder and harder the more details that are given.

I think that community college is giving you too rosy a picture. You have to remember that colleges are also in the business of making money, and from their side, they probably want to paint the rosiest scenerio.

But your circumstances are not ordinary, and he has very strong ties to this country. So, regardless of what the college is saying, I don't agree that it will be nearly as easy as they are saying it will be. I don't think they really understand just how the consulates work and how difficult this will be. Were they aware when you asked them about the F-1, etc.....that he has a brother here in the USA?

So , basically that factor alone........changes things a lot.

Without being too specific, for my own reasons.....I will say that even with ties to the USA, he might get the F-1. As for the amount that might be needed for support, the one example I know of at a major university , it was $17,000. At least , that was how much they asked for this particular university. I don't know how the sponsorship amount would vary for a community college (if it would at all).

A university will be much more expensive then a community college.Of course we want his brother here too. He went to a University there and they failed him for money reasons. Some of these countries are corrupt. He wants an education so he can get a good job. As far as him wanting to stay here well, we can worry about that after he goes to school. Ill give u an example: His brother went 6 years university and did the oral test and asked for 4000 dollars when he didnt have it they failed him. 6 years!!!! Thats awful. This is not the same brother that wants to go to school here. He doesnt want to take the chance to waste years like he has already wasted 4 for nothing and his other brother 6.A community college will give him an American Associate degree and where he is very very smart hopefully he can get a scholarship into the University. Thats what we are hoping for. This is not a shady deal as I have brought my husband here legally. To get a brother or sister here takes many years. At least if he can get a good education here there is a chance he will get into a university. If not then of course he will have to go back. To me its worth a try.
