Dear Visa Journey Readers,

I have yet another question and I am going to apologize in advance for my lack of understanding. So my wonderful husband received his Employment Authorization Card in the mail yesterday *woohoooooooo* and we sat there staring in awe at the beautiful coloring, embossed birth date, shiny seal, finger print!, and now we are wondering, how do we use this?

I have posted a couple of times (thank you wonderful members for soothing my frazzled and often panicked filled emotional queries) and have explained that we have an interview on the 26th of September. I am trying to add him to as much as I possibly can (lease, life insurance, etc.) so I was wondering, do I use his USCIS # (Alien #) in place of the social security number? It is the same amount of digits as a SSN but the format is different (XXX-XXX-XXX). This question also translates to how he should apply for jobs.

Any insight into how he can be recognized by the government with this EAD prior to our AOS interview (which I believe is when he is qualified for a Green Card if we pass ***fingers crossed*** and can then get a proper SSN) is greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you!

Natalie

Hi Natalie,

Congrats on your husband getting an EAD. Please note that

1. EAD Alien number (A# 999-999-999) is only used for immigration purposes.

2. EAD is required as proof, when apply for Drivers License if he does not have one.

3. EAD number is required if you move your house, if you do, do not forget to fill out the AR-11 form online.

If he is applying for a job, they will ask his work authorization and "he can say he has a WORK PERMIT which enables him to work for any employer and needs no sponsorship now or in the future". Once he gets a job the only time he would require to take his EAD is when they fill up the I-9 FORM as proof that is he legal to work in the USA.

Hope this helps

Use his EAD card to apply for SS number. You'll get your card in a week at most then you add him to bank account and whatever you need too. Congrats by the way

He can get a SSN with the EAD. What kind of "recognition from the government" are you looking for? his A# is only for USCIS, no one else.
