you are right on #1 but until 2008 most candidate did not had much controversy about where they were born and how they had attains their US citizenship.

In 2008 that was change and existing vetting process was not enough.

on # 2 Romney might have applied for amnesty and might have even got amnesty but that does not make him a felon.

He was running business and like every business in US takes advantage of tax loopholes he might have taken too, so whats the big deal about it. Just like Clinton everyone was happy in his 8 yr term... he did few bad things and it was discounted as his personal issues - it did not mean he was bad at running the country.

There was no question on how Obama had attained citizenship - he was born in the US and is hence a natural born citizen. There was a group of imbeciles - there still is - that questioned whether he was born in the US despite publicly available proof that he was.

If one is amnestied, one must have committed a crime. If there was no crime committed, then there can be no amnesty. Last I checked, a person that has committed a crime is a felon.
