I've read the step by step guide and I am still abit confused by it all. I arrive in Seattle on the 03/01/2006, first step Jon and I have decided is to book our wedding at the local county court. We have decided to wait for the SSN as we are getting married within 2 weeks. So after that we file for AOS? Will this include the EAD? what is EAD by the way I cannot see it written anywhere.

Any help would be appriciated

Janice

The EAD( Employment Authorization Document) is optional. But you will need it if your husband wants to work while he's waiting on the greencard

Once You are married and have certified copies of the marriage certificate You would apply for Your adjustment of status. The EAD is a card that is good for one year from it's issue date and allows You to legally work in the US until Your AOS is approved. It is much easier just to send them all in at the same time remembering to put seperate checks for each particular fee. Once You are married though ( someone can help me out with this) I don't think You are eligle for a SSN # till Your EAD is approved because You are no longer a fiance.

K-1 status makes you eligible for SSN, so you can go to the SSA and get it right away. After you get married, you are no longer K-1, and cannot apply for SSN until after you get your EAD (I believe so, at least).

I'm in Seattle, too, so feel free to PM me if you have any questions! :D

I'm in the Seattle area too and went thru the Seattle district office for both my Green Card and very recently, my daughters Green Card.

You can apply for your SSN card two weeks after your arrival into the U.S. It takes two weeks for you to show up in the SAVE system, so don't go too early or it will cause delays. You can also wait until after you are married if you want. I applied for my SSN card two days after our wedding so that I wouldn't have to do a name change to my married name later.

Janice....if you can, try and get your SSN before you get married otherwise you will have to wait until you have your EAD. It is usually 2 weeks after arrival that your name appears in their computer system (SAVE they call it) but I checked with them after 7 days and I was in there....but don't let them do a 'manual search' for your name as that takes much longer (sheesh where is MDYoung). In fact we got my SSN then went over the road to the Courthouse and got married!! So you have 2 weeks to check it out....good luck
