Bringing family members over for the wedding?

I've narrowed the list down to TWO family members we want to try to get visitor visas for, so that they can attend the wedding. They are his sister and a close cousin.

How do I need to so this? I'm planning on sending the wedding invitations, as well as a notarized letter requesting that they be given a visitor visa (one for each). The sister has a minor child (16 years old) and a house in her name in Haiti, and I understand that helps. The cousin is single & in the university. His family owns property, but not him. Any advice on that?

2011 - Met online
2012/05/03 - Started "Dating"
2012/06/27-07/16 - Met in Haiti/got engaged
2012/08/20 - I-129F Sent
2012/08/28-09/05 - Second trip to Haiti
2012/08/28 - I-129F NOA1
2012/08/29 - Check Cashed
2012/08/31 - NOA1 Hard Copy Received
2012/09/05 - NOA2 (I-129F)
2012/09/10 - Emailed U.S. Embassy in Haiti for Packet 3.
2012/09/10 - NVC Received
2012/09/10 - NOA2 Hard-Copy
2012/09/11 - Called NVC to check status, told fiance's DOB is wrong, but it's right on both application forms. They said send birth cert & passport.
2012/09/13 - Submitted DS-156 online & printed copies (& emailed to both of us).
2012/09/14 - Emailed scanned copies of original application, birth cert & passport to NVC.
2012/09/14 - Called & insisted they fix THEIR mistake. Message forwarded to supervisor. Got an email within 30 minutes; fixed! Called & confirmed.
2012/09/19 - Still in AP (Administrative/Additional Processing)... waiting...
2012/09/25 - Left NVC
2013/01/08/18 - Third trip to Haiti
2013/01/17 - K1 Visa Denied (he had been given a fake death certificate for his first wife who was killed in the 2010 earthquake)
2013/03/05-20 - Fourth trip to Haiti
2013/03/14 - Got Married in Port au Prince

2013/08/11-22 - Fifth trip to Haiti

2014/01/26-02/12 - Sixth trip to Haiti

2014/03/12-15 - Seventh trip to Haiti

Nothing more that you can do. Send the invitation letter and they apply for a visa and attend the interview.

I'm not trying to discourage you at all but rather showing the reality of the difficulties of a US B visa. The refusal rates for FY 2011 are here

It's a good thing that you are checking into it now but be sure to manage everyone's expectations and as others have and will tell you the burden is on the applicant.

Well it looks that Haiti has one of the highest approval rates for B visas

So, why would this be discouraging...??? Sounds very ENcouraging to me.

It's probably easier for you to get a visa to Haiti. Have a wedding there after you get married in the US.

agreed. we tried to get my husband's two haitian sisters a visa to come to our wedding, and they were turned down twice!

but, hopefully your circumstances will be different than mine!

Can you give me specifics on the details? My husband's sister raised him when his parents died, so she's basically his mother.

She has a house in her name, and she has a minor son, although 16-year-old son might not be enough of a draw to guarantee she'll be back. I appreciate any details you can give that might help.

Those are refusal rates.

But that's 58.2% refusal.. a little more than half. So that means there's a 41.8% acceptance. If we have almost a 50/50 chance of getting them here, then maybe it's worth it?

So as I'm looking at this again, it appears that it might be easiest to get the cousin here. He is in school in the D.R., and if he can show that he has already registered for classes in January (after the wedding) and that he'll loose his money if he does not stay (not to mention the fact that he's 3/4 of the way done with his degree & will not get it if he leaves). OR if he can show that he's pre-paid for his housing for at least a couple of months in January, that might work?

Also, he has some land & whatnot that he can claim in Haiti, and he is also in the middle of a major construction project in Haiti, which should show that he intends to come back & finish it? I think maybe we can angle it so that it looks good for him?

The sister might be more of a challenge... :crying:
