Direct Consular Filing in Beijing - Need to have marriage licences translated?

My wife and I are preparing to file her I-130 petition here in Beijing where we live. Throughout all of my research and getting things prepared I somehow failed to notice that our marriage licences (which are in Chinese since we were married in China) would need to be translated into English. Having it translated into English is fine - but the mention of a "white book" being acquired had me a little stumped.

So I called the office where we got married in Wuhan (my wife is from Hubei) and they said they didn't know what I was talking about.

We called a couple of translation companies here in Beijing and they said that they have done it before but have never heard of a white book, rather, they provide the translation on a piece A4 sized paper and call it good.

My question: does our marriage licences (you get two - one for each person) both need to be translated and if so does it need to be this white book? And is the place where you were married the only place to acquire one?

Bottom line - I'm trying to avoid another trip to Wuhan for documents. If it can be done in Beijing that'd be great.

you need to go to the notary public in china to obtain the white book. tell them you want your marriage certificate to be translated and certified in english for purpose of immigration.

01/26/12 - NOA1 received and processing at Vermont.

06/28/12 - NOA2 announced on status check.

06/29/12 - NVC received case learned on 07/2/12.

06/30/12 - Hard copy NOA2 received.

07/09/12 - NVC Casefile Number and IIN Issued.

07/16/12 - Receive and Sent DS-3032 via email.

07/17/12 - Mailed DS-3032 via mail, AOS bill received via email, paid online, Optin email sent.

07/18/12 - Optin accepted and new case number, AOS marked paid, emailed AOS packet.

07/24/12 - Assigned as Agent, IV Fee bill received via email, paid online.

07/25/12 - IV Fee marked paid, emailed IV packet.

07/31/12 - Emailed GZO Supplemental Packet 3.

08/02/12 - Case completed and commenced final review.

08/03/12 - Shipped all copies of forms/letters/documents to my wife - arriving on 8/9/12.

08/06/12 - Case completed final review.

08/09/12 - Appointment letter received via email interview date set 9/6/12.

08/14/12 - Medical exam done.

08/15/12 - Medical exam results all normal.

09/06/12 - Submitted required documents at the embassy and interview set next day at 0730.

Thanks. The real issue is that I was hoping to be able to avoid a trip down to Wuhan, where we were married, in order to get the marriage certificate translated into the "white book". All that was required was my wife's "zhan zhu zheng" - a temporary residence booklet that you can get when you register at the police station in your neighborhood.

It turns out that we can just have it done in Beijing at the Gong Zheng Chu near where we live, which is a relief, because it'd be very inconvenient to have to travel down to Hubei.

someone in yer wife's hukuo book in Wuhan can get it done.

If you got it done 'locally' - well, yer done. But she may need to get the PCC anyway from her hukuo city... her relatives in her hukuo book in Wuhan can get that, also get white book translation of it as well.

Thanks, Darnell. At this point we're only preparing the I-130 petition which require proof of marriage bona fides - we're submitting the marriage licences as part of that and needed to have them translated.

The real issue is that we don't have the time right now to take a trip to Wuhan - we've got our meeting at the embassy to submit the petition soon.

We'll worry about the other documents after the petition has been accepted and we're preparing for the interview. :yes:

the notary i know in zhuhai is hell. it takes forever to get things done!
