Hi,

I want to get a California Photo Identification Card (Not Drivers License) for my Fiancee as soon as possible after her arrival.

Does anybody have first hand knowledge if the Social Security Number is needed first or not? I've seen different opinions....and also wondering if it depends on if it is a License or Identification Card???

The California DMV website says that a SSN is required except as follows:

Exception to the SSN requirement:

If you are legally present in the US, but ineligible for an SSN, you are exempt from SSN requirements. However, you must still provide an acceptable birth date/legal presence document for any DL/ID card application OR provide a valid SSN.

Does that exclude a K-1 Fiancee or no?

Thanks,

J

K1's are eligible for ssn. SSA can't give you a paper saying your fiancee is ineligible when she isn't. Wait approx a week after POE, go to SSA and apply for ssn.

My state does not make an exception unless you're ineligible. State ID has the same requirements with documents as driver's license, permits and endorsements.

K1 process, October 2010 > POE, July 2011

I-129F approved in 180 days from NOA1 date. (195 days from filing to NOA2 in hand)

Interview took 224 days from I-129F NOA1 date. (241 days from filing petition until visa in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until POE: 285 days

Click timeline or "about me" for all details.

AOS process, December 2011 > July 2012

EAD/AP Approval took 51 days from NOA1 date to email update. (77 days from filing until EAD/AP in hand)

AOS Approval took 206 days from NOA1 date to email update. (231 days from filing until greencard in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until greencard in hand: 655 days

i got mine in Covina California,i enter the US as K3.when i apply my CA ID they ask my passport, port of entry, the birth certificate.thats it. You cannot apply for SSN if you do not have the work authorization permit.U have to apply it first then when u recie your EAD you can apply for SSN.
