The Times LA correspondent Chris Ayres bemoans the reputation of British food in the US in this article http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,6-2418041,00.html

That hasn't stopped chef Cathal Armstrong from opening a superb fish and chip restaurant in Alexandria, VA 'Eamon's a Dublin Chipper' which serves excellent fish'n'chips, mushy peas, home made sauces, and Guinness on tap. Well worth a visit if you're in the DC area and want a taste of home. http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?n...ies=Restaurants

Where's the best British style meal you've experienced near you in the US?

Best fish and chips I have had state side were at my own house!

I have perfected my own version and my fiance agrees that they are pretty darn close to the original taste.

We then fried them up again for about 35 people...and they all loved it!

So now it is time for me to open a pub and serve fish and chips! :)

Cheers me dears for adding your recommendations, there's nothing like local knowledge. Kath I feel your pain, it must be difficult to find somewhere in the midwest that will do you a proper Aussie pie floater. You can buy tins of Batchelors mushy peas and frozen meat pies from the British Pantry in Aldie, VA http://www.thebritishpantry.us but I'm not sure how they'd do shipping for frozen goods. Worth giving them a call I reckon.

I admit I do enjoy the seafood here on the East coast. There's a terrific fish market on the DC Waterfront where you can buy all manner of fish from boats tied up alongside. They'll steam shrimp and cover it with spicy all bay seasoning, a bit messy to eat but scrumptious and cheap. I've also really enjoyed eating fried oysters at Iggy's in Warwick Rhode Island, the all you can eat lobster supper at New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island, and cod and scrunchions on Newfoundland. Here are links to some of the places I've mentioned:

Waterfront fish market, Washington DC http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/02...ure7/index.html

Iggy's clam shack, Warwick, RI http://www.iggysdoughboys.com/

New Glasgow Lobster Suppers, PEI, Canada http://www.peilobstersuppers.com/

Lots of places in Bar Harbor (Maine) have great fish and chips.

ETA: but then again, I've never had fish and chips in the UK (I'm assuming Heathrow doesn't count) so what do I know.
