So my fiancee was just approved at her interview :D and we're planning on her moving over to the U.S. in just over a month. It's going to be, I suspect, a bit of a culture shock for her (from a small, and very beautiful, island to the D.C. metro area), plus she's very close to her family, which I anticipate she'll probably be missing a lot.

My questions are for people on here who have been in her position:

What were some of the difficulties you encountered in adjusting to the U.S. culture?

What (if anything) do you think I can do to lessen the burden on her as much as possible?

Thanks

Congratulations for her approved visa ! :)

Well, please try to be very accommodating and supportive to your fiancee. At first, she would be very excited when she gets there. But after few weeks or months she would definitely be missing her own family, place and even the foods she use to eat. However, it will help her adjust if you could create a very positive environment or atmosphere in the house. I'm sure she would love it there eventually. In short, try to make her feel at home. Just be yourself.... always try to understand, keep the flame always and stay in love forever. Everything work out in the name of true love and respect...foremost, with God nothing can go wrong. All the best for you and your fiancee ! :)

Congratulations :):star::dance: .

To help her you can purchase the book "Culture Shock USA" from Amazon.com for under $10.00. I gave that to my fiancee and she has a better understanding of things.

Things that will help:

- Skype or someway to contact her family.

- Familiar foods.

- Planned activities or suggested activities for when you're at work.

- Lots of activities for you together when you.are not working.

- Let her pick some new household items; linen ,blankets, pots pans, things that will make it feel like her home too.

- If she is very social look up some groups or clubs she could join (maybe some from where she is from) or a gym.

- Lots of love and understanding. There will be culture shock, she will miss her family and everything she was used to. If you wife gets upset and cries or says she dislikes X about America or it was better in Y , try to understand her frustration and not get upset :)

I hope some of these ideas help.

Congratulations and good luck!

Above are all good suggestions. AS a female who has lived abroad I have to add a plus one to just be supportive and understanding if she cries and gets frustrated with things in the US sometimes. If you can, try to get some TV channels in her native language or newspaper. Sometimes, even after 7 years I get sick of turning on the TV and just hearing Hindi and Gujurati (local language here) and feel some relief to have 3 or 4 english channels and I am not one to watch much TV either.

DC is a great place, I loved living there and I think if you can help her expand her social network, especially to meet other people from her area of the world it will help her immensely.
