Terence Tyler, Old Bridge Shooter Who Killed Two, Self At Pathmark, Was Ex-Marine, Officials Say

OLD BRIDGE, N.J. -- A former Marine opened fire with an assault rifle inside a New Jersey supermarket early Friday morning, killing two store employees before committing suicide, officials said.

The gunman was Terence Tyler, 23, a law enforcement source told The Associated Press. The man's identity was also confirmed by John Niccollai, the president of a food handlers' union that represents workers at the Pathmark store, who spoke to company officials about the shooting.

A Marine Corps spokesman said Tyler spent three years in the Marines and left the service in 2010. He did not deploy overseas, and the spokesman would not say whether Tyler was discharged honorably or not. Tyler's "home of record" is Brooklyn.

Tyler had been employed at the store as a clerk for about two weeks, Niccollai told The Huffington Post. After finishing his shift at around 4 a.m. on Friday, Tyler left the store and soon returned dressed in a military-style camouflage uniform and armed with an "assault-type rifle" and a pistol.

Police said the shooter fired more than 16 rounds, fatally wounding two store employees, Christina LoBrutto, 18, and Bryan Breen, 24, before turning the gun on himself.

First of all, there's no such thing as an "ex-Marine" or a "former Marine." Marines are Marines for life.

Next, if someone fires "more than 16 rounds" it's likely they fired 17 rounds. Maybe even 18. Why not just say so?

Lastly, if a 23-year-old dude shoots another dude that's close to his age and a chick that's close to their age... it aint hard to figure out why. This isn't crazy terrorism at work here and as quick as you are to blame the inanimate metal objects for this "tragedy" why not recognize that store clerks are always armed with inanimate metal objects (box cutters) and capable of killing thousands?

Why this is nationwide news is beyond me.

New Jersey is a state with strict gun control laws similar to NY and both of these states had shootings in back to back weeks. So gun restrictions don't seem to be quite so effective.

Guns are popular tools for resolving love triangles. And safety, can't forget guns are great for that can we?
