You said you're getting food stamps for your child? How old is your child? Is it possible that you are getting WIC benefits and not food stamps? Those are two very different systems, and WIC tends to have broader income guidelines (you will qualify even if you make more money), because they recognize that getting children healthy food is very important for their lifetime nutritional foundation.

If you currently make at or above the 125% of national poverty guidelines for your household of three (yourself, child, and incoming spouse), then you will qualify. Just make sure you provide the documentation that previous posters mentioned (pay stubs, letter from employer, etc.)

If you need some type of welfare how can you meet the immigration qualifications let alone afford to travel to a foreign country? This does not seem right others in their postings also.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

The question is how are you going to support your spouse when you can't even support yourself?

Exactly lol

Just want to reiterate here because it's on the ball...

As the Sponsor, receiving means tested public benefits (including foodstamps and WIC) will not disqualify the applicant. IF the sponsor does not currently meet the minimum financial requirements for the AOS than a co-sponsor is needed. It's stated very straightforward in the instructions for the I-864 which can be read here:

http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-864instr.pdf

Individuals' opinions here on the internet are not going to affect your eligibility to sponsor.

It's a valid question. If someone needs government assistance I don't think they should be able to bring someone over from another country. Chances are the immigrant will have a difficult time finding a job. I know because my husband is a teacher and he is still 3 1/2 years later underemployed. I make enough to support him, me and my two kids. Being honest always gets viewed as someone being hateful. The truth is not hateful.

I don't believe the OP requested advice or chastisement. I believe she asked a legitimate question.

If you can't say anything nice or helpful than don't say anything at all-- Anyone else ever heard this? The subsequent irrelevant comments can be viewed as rude or hateful because they did not have good intentions behind them.
