"Pro-abortion" would mean, to me, something like advocating that every woman had to have at least one. "Pro-choice", on the other hand, means that I am in support of a woman making a decision about what is best for her, given her particular and unique set of circumstances. It's a big difference.

If you believe no woman should be forced to choose between pursuing her education and career plans and sacrificing her child...
We are dedicated to systematically eliminating the root causes that drive women to abortion - primarily lack of practical resources and support - through holistic, woman-centered solutions. Women deserve better than abortion.

Those two quotes are taken from the website Gary has posted. I don't agree with the whole website, but you know, I think they're awesome quotes - and I'm pro-choice.

Let's change the focus. What if we reduced abortion not through the use of the law, but by providing the resources to help those who would like to keep their unborn child but are not able? That would benefit people two-fold: less abortion for those on that side of the debate, better care and support for them women involved providing a better chance of a higher quality of life for that child. If there were better support in place, the choice may not be whether or not to keep the baby but how to incorporate that baby into your life. Some women would still choose an abortion, but I believe it would be far fewer.

Maybe there is a way to meet in the middle - what do people think? I'm genuinely interested to know.

Killing babies will not solve the foster parent issue, welfare, homelessness, single-parent families, or neglect. Historically, I think it would be fair to say that since abortion has been legal, those things have gotten worse in this country.

A little piece of trivia:

  • Q: what right was first granted specifically by NAZI GERMANY?
  • A: Abortion

I'm also going to add my Re. 1 worth: I have NEVER seen "pro-choice" protestors in front of Chinese Embassy (and I HAVE driven by it lately--Red China is a country which FORCES abortions to enforce "one-child" policy; certainly the only one here who has a "choice" is the government) or Indian (country known for rampant sex-selection abortions--from societal ideology; though laws exist against this, very poorly enforced. Tell me how the woman has a "choice" here?). Till I do, I'll consider the term "pro-abortion" more accurate than "pro-choice"!

Pro-choice does not mean pro-abortion.

Of course it does, you just don't like it sounds. How many Pro-choice people are not pro-abortion? Pro-choice sounds a lot nicer.

#######, I am anti-abortion as it is not something for me personally, but I am pro-choice. I chose not to have an abortion when I was a teenager. People that only see things in black and white also show ignorance and a lack of understanding of the many variables in life. Life isn't tidy with everything in its place as those places will mean something else to another person. Nobody has the right to force their moral beliefs on another. That goes across the board to cover many issues throughout the world. e.g. Missionaries caused havoc in the past with various cultures by forcing their beliefs. What right does anyone have to say 'only my way is the right way'.

Please explain this comment--when did missionaries actually make an Asian culture into a European or American one?

now to really muddy the waters........

all of the previous posts are interesting and thought provoking. and yours is well put, aussie. kudos to you.

however, as a guy, i have to wonder just why men are so wound up about this topic. it sure ain't their body they are trying to regulate.

if i have to choose between the two, i believe pro choice is where i'd choose for the reason of at least there is a choice in that regard. i don't approve of abortion as a form of birth control, but in cases of rape or incest, such must be available. and then there is the topic of if the child is born deformed, etc.

i believe this topic belongs entirely in the hands of women to resolve as it is a woman that carries the baby for 9 months, not the man. so you women figure it all out

I have led a very wide and varried life in my 45 + years and if you think that there is so much good in this world then you need to take off your rose tinted glasses and go check out a few places...

You think everyone has oppertunities here in the US... I dont think so it is a fight of the fittest and if things happen to you that are beyond your control there is very little you can do to get back on the American Dream...

And yes I already do all that I can for people who need that little boast... after I have worked at my main job I go 3 nights aweek and help man a food kitchen in south boston where we feed the men woman and children that are abused and forgotten by the good christian country they were born in.... so dont tell me how wonderful life is.... tell them...

Kezzie

You contradict yourself...if they were truely forgotten, there wouldn't be a soup kitchen.

Well I dont see too many of your god fearing people standing outside on a cold winters night serving food to those with no warm home to go to..... no they are all at home practicing their religion in their nice warm homes and religious places.... I also do not need thanks for what I do... I do not do it for thanks I do it because I want then to feel they have not been abandoned by everyone... I cant see too many of you who have spewed so much veniom in this thread for woman who have had an abortion standing talking to a woman who is homeless and saw no other choice than to do exactly that... I do not judge any of the people I meet... they are no diffrent to me.... just in need of help and compassion....

thats funny. you seem to think you have a more impartial group in your source

google-americans believe in God and article after article you will see that America is truely one nation under GOD. We are believers, our country is founded on the belief in God and we were proud to proclaim it wherever we could-in our anthem, on our money, in our declaration of independance on our buildings in our presidential speeches, in inaugurations everywhere. You are greatly greatly mistaken if you think we are not belivers in God in this country.

Probably our greatest strength and greatest weakness for this proclaimation is that we are tolerant and welcoming in this country to those of all religions and beliefs based on the simple belief that that is how God would want it. He has blessed this country.

OH PUHLEASE. Take your preaching to your home. This is the land of the free. That means agnostics & atheists too. Separation of church & state, remember that?

welcoming in this country to those of all religions and beliefs

I suppose 'we' welcome Islamics in America? I'm not sure we are so 'welcoming' . Afghanistan and Iraq - good old American Christians were so quick to judge them by their religions...

Once again, why is this thread still open?

Salty Salty, devilette.

There is no law that forces you to attend a church or believe anything. Belief in God is the history of this nation and you can't erase history

Good point--this is exactly why I specifically noted the CONSPICUOUS ABSENCE of "pro-choice" protestors near Indian and Chinese embassy/consulates!

When I lived in Hong Kong, there was a huge protest against the one-child policy outside the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the People's Republic - it was organized by feminist groups (Western and Chinese). Their message was precisely that women should not be forced to have abortions. During my time there was no similar protest from "Pro Life" groups -- and there are a lot of western missionaries (mostly mormons) based in HK.

Again, that is what we do. We are there beside you. I had a woman come into my office this week. 27 years old. Has a 12 year old, an 8 year old, twin 3 year olds and is pregnant with triplets!! :help: She came to our office for help. She loves her kids, but triplets are scaring her to death. She wants to give them up for adoption when they are born becuase she said there is no way she can handle 7 kids and needed help to find out where to go and how to do that. She is doing the best she can in her situation. The dads are MIA and not a help. She is on welfare and that helps alot and we help her with her elect bills. The triplets were just not in the plan, she was looking forward to going back to work full time when her 3 year olds were in school. I understand that. She has hope...and she laughs because she can't believe how fertile she is!!! When you take the statistics down to human level, it is real. These are real people with real feelings, concerns, and worries. We take it one file at a time....

Actually, I think you will find that a large majority of the soup kitchens and things of the like are run by religious organizations or get large volunteer populations from religious organizations. At least, that is true around where I live. You don't have to agree with anything but don't say that religious people don't help out the community, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a church where there aren't many volunteer things going on at any given time.

Not saying religious people always do the right thing and all are volunteers but you can't escape the fact that they do do a lot (I'm mainly talking about Christians since I can't speak for other religions but I'm not trying to exclude, I can only talk from personal experience though).
