I've seen children so badly abused by parents that didnt really want them but kept them because they felt they had to "take responsibilty for their actions" and that equated to keeping a child they didn't want as a penance for having sex.

I agree with everything you said, esp. this part. I think it's a bad idea for the government to treat pregnancy and childbirth as a woman's punishment for being a hussy and having sex.

I'd be interested to know what you think about this. Abortion is illegal in Ireland, but legal in the UK.

Without quoting specific figures it seems common-sense to me that there will be a demand for abortions, regardless of whether they are legal. Not only that but that people will find a way (as in Ireland) to have them carried out - whether that means going to another country where they are legal (such as the UK), or by DIY/backstreet practices.

The latter, in the absence of an easily available alternative (such as going on a weekend trip to the UK) will surely be more commonplace if abortion itself is made broadly illegal.

Seems clear to me.

Sure, you think it's murder. But that's just your opinion and it will have no effect on changing the minds of those who choose to have abortions.

Anyone who advocates illegalizing abortion is deluded if they think it will reduce actual abortions. What I think you want is to enjoy watching more women suffer for choosing to have an abortion. You probably want them dead for their choice.

NOW we are in agreement! It's frustrating to me as well to see so many people, those who choose to have abortions and those who choose to have 8 babies they can't take care of, treat sexuality so casually. I think children are exposed to sex at a much younger age than years ago, which is leading to the sort of free sex without any intimacy or personal responsibility that causes a lot of problems for people. Practically and politically speaking, however, I don't think the government can impose that personal responsibility onto anyone and make someone "own up" to sex by having a pregnancy/baby they don't want.

I think... again... the government can't impose that level of personal responsibility. Also, this seems awfully one-sided. What about men who have fathered numerous children who don't pay a penny in their support? Should they be required to get vaccectomies at any point to stop the flow of their potent seed?

I think the best thing to do is for someone -- somewhere -- to take a stand against a popular culture that promotes responsibility-free sexuality and panders that to children and teenagers. I would do it, but, you know... I got lots of stuff going on lol. But seriously, parents need to turn off the MTV, turn off the TV shows where all the teenagers are sleeping with each other, etc. Basically, I don't think the government can and will stop this problem -- it's a cultural problem I don't think the government can regulate.
