Hi,

:help: My fiancee and I are planning to marry in India. The problem is noone seems to know what the proper guidelines to successfully do it is. The wedding planner told me that I had to have 30 day residency in India. The Indian Consulate here said they never heard of such a thing. The marriage registrars office there told Manoj that he needed to come back and talk with someone else since it would be a Christian ceremony and that he needed to be a member of a church there AND have someone from the church vouch for him. We are in a total state of confusion!

I am scheduled to fly into New Delhi on March 11 and then we are going to Goa for five days where we were going to have a beach ceremony. To top it off the wedding planner wants 657.00 just to do the paperwork. This is in addition to the cost of the wedding ceremony. Manoj believes the guy is simply trying to screw us and he said he refuses to allow us to pay that much for someone else to do something he feels we could do ourselves. That would be great if only we could find someone who could give us proper information. We want to go ahead and do a Christian ceremony or whatever is going to be the fastest for us because we would like to get started on our paperwork. We are planning to have a huge traditional Hindu ceremony in eight months.

Has anyone here married in India? Did you have to have a 30 day residency there? Can you tell me who or what office we would need to contact to get proper information? Any help you can provide would be great.

Thanks

30 day residency in India is NOT required to perform marriage there. The "planner" may be confusing it with the 60-day requirement for DCF.

Specific paperwork advice can be given once you provide more complete info--basically, what status are you in US (temp worker, GC, US citizen)?

2005/07/10 I-129F filed for Pras

2005/11/07 I-129F approved, forwarded to NVC--to Chennai Consulate 2005/11/14

2005/12/02 Packet-3 received from Chennai

2005/12/21 Visa Interview Date

2006/04/04 Pras' entry into US at DTW

2006/04/15 Church Wedding at Novi (Detroit suburb), MI

2006/05/01 AOS Packet (I-485/I-131/I-765) filed at Chicago

2006/08/23 AP and EAD approved. Two down, 1.5 to go

2006/10/13 Pras' I-485 interview--APPROVED!

2006/10/27 Pras' conditional GC arrives -- .5 to go (2 yrs to Conditions Removal)

2008/07/21 I-751 (conditions removal) filed

2008/08/22 I-751 biometrics completed

2009/06/18 I-751 approved

2009/07/03 10-year GC received; last 0.5 done!

I'm a U.S. Citizen. I think some of the murkiness has been cleared up after contacting the Citizen Services at the U.S. Consulate. I also found a new planner who is more aware of what is going on. Thanks.

Good luck! Indian marriage law is a clusterfukc so I'm glad to hear you found someone to guide you through the process :)

hi there,

I recently got married in india and applied for a I-130 PETITION. Yes YOU NEED A 60 DAY RESIDENCY INDIA(60 DAYS..FROM THE TIME U GET THAT STAMP AT THE AIRPORT WHEN U ENTER INDIA). They have this posted on the US Embassy sites. There are other posts here that talk more about the process for I-130. But the basic requirement is to have a 2 month residency, apply with form 130 and form g325(2 forms for each of you) and have to apply at new delhi embassy. I dont know if you are a us citizen or not but go to the forum link in this website and then look for a forum named DIRECT CONSULAR FILING. Read through it and you should be straight. Let me know if you need further help. my e-mail: vasimahi@yahoo.com
