Ok so my husband is a very big fan of breadfruit and ackeee lol and i must say i am missing the Jamaican food as well so he wanted to travel with a small knapsack {hand luggage) containing some good JA food. I told him i don't think it's such a good idea though since he is a first time traveler so i wanted to know if anyone thinks that customs would really harass him with the food just because he would be traveling for the first time?

I don't think it will be a problem. my mom always give my wife ackie and breadfruit to take with her for her parents every time she comes. My mom is spending a week her and her parents right now, and she took some with her on her trip earlier this summer.

No harrassment.....just be sure to declare it, and let customs make the decision.

I remember a couple years ago I brought a fresh avacado from the philippines. This thing was huge, like a basketball. I told customs I had it....they opened my luggage and looked at it in disbelief.

I got down on my knees begging them to let me keep it....I had all the customs agents smiling and laughing.

In the end....no luck. I think they all had fresh avacado for lunch that day.

I see you laughing, but not offering to send it...kick :bonk:

I believe some customs people know and some don't. I had snails taken from me before I left Nigeria. They said if I had them in my checked luggage I could have taken them, but it was too late for that. I had a frozen red snapper fish in my lunch bag and no one questioned that. At customs the guy asked me what it was, I told him, and he waved me through. When I got back and read the guidelines the US wouldn't have let me bring them in anyway. Game of chance.

The guidelines say fish is alright:

Fish- personal amounts of fish, shrimp, abalone and other seafood are allowed and can be fresh, frozen, dried, smoked, canned or cooked

Depends on where he POE's, if he goes through Miami, they are going to take it. They take my Mangoes every time.

Fruit is a BIG NO No. Breadfriut must be cooked, if not they will take it. BWI will take it aswell. Ackee must be partial cooked aswell. Do not bring thru over-head, put into the luggage that is checked in.
