Medical Exam in Melbourne, Australia

Hi guys, just had my medical at Dr Okraglik's clinic today (29/8/12) and thought I'd post my experience.

My appointment at Bridge Street Clinic, Port Melbourne was at 10am, but I arrived a little earlier and filled out the forms they needed. They have all the forms there and you will need to bring 3 passport photos (Australian size is fine), your passport and vaccine records.

A little before 10am a nurse called me and I had my blood taken.

Next another nurse called me and I had my chest Xray done.

After a little wait, another nurse again called me and she checked my height, weight, took my blood pressure and tested my eyes for colour blindness and vision (with and without glasses).

Then I had to wait about 20-25 minutes to see Dr Okraglik.

Once he called me through he looked over the forms I'd filled, and I remember him asking my name (spelling), birthdate, occupation and age. He asked for my age twice during the exam. He also asked if I was married, which of course I said no. I felt almost like these were 'tripping up' questions, like he was trying to see I was telling the truth or something!

Amongst the things he checked and asked included:

- Asking all the medical questions on the form again that I had filled. He asked these questions very quickly, without dwelling too much on any one particular.

- If I had ever had an operation.

- My vaccine records. He photocopied my immunity report against chickenpox and other vaccine records. I was told I needed to get another shot of MMR and Tdap which I had done with the nurse after.

- When my last pap smear was.

- Checked my eyes, ears and throat.

- While laying/sitting on the bed did a general check of my heart, lungs (back and chest), armpits and tapped around my stomach and groin (external only). He had gotten me to take my shoes and socks off while doing it, which I think meant he checked my ankles too, though it was very fast and I didn't really see him do it. He asked me to take deep breaths in and out while doing some of the checks.

- Upon seeing a tattoo on my back asked how many I had (two) and then where the other was, which I showed him.

That was pretty much it and he seemed satisfied, while he was finishing up the reports he asked me where I was going in the States, and what my fiance did for a living. He asked whether I wanted the results mailed or would I come back and pick them up, and then sent me through to see the nurse for the vaccines I needed. There was no urine sample taken or any other tests after that.

It cost $346.50 for the exam, $7 for the postage, and $53 for the vaccines.

I found everyone to be very friendly, and it wasn't nerve-wracking at all. If I had any complaints it would only be that I found the girls at the front desk to be a little unprofessional (their attitudes seemed a little off), and I had to tell the receptionist that they had put 'Mrs' on my ID sticker, where it should be 'Miss', which she quickly changed.

I would definitely recommend Dr Okraglik in Melbourne :) Feel free to ask any questions!

So he doesn't do any smear situation himself? I had thought they had to inspect *down there*
