Engagement Certificate?

So I am currently getting ready to head to Cambodia for my fiancee's interview. We heard a rumor from a friend of ours that lives there (Cambodia) that we will need a specific form that is almost like an engagement certificate. Basically there is a form that almost everyone seems to get that says you got engaged on a certain day and it gets approved and stamped by the city/government there. Apparently we hear that if we do not have this paper we will not pass.

Has anyone who has filed with Cambodia ever heard of this or know anything about it? I've heard the term "Engagement approval" and "engagement certificate" from multiple people over there so I am beginning to worry about this. The packet 3 which was sent to me (petitioner in the US) did not mention anything even close to a form like this.

TY in advance.

Hi!

Since your question is Cambodia specific, I have reported your message to have it moved to the regional forums in hopes you'll get an accurate answer to your question. good.gif

** Moving from K1 to Asia-East and Pacific regional forum as country specific ****

Moving this to regional will not get me an answer fast. This is related to the K1 process and the K1 interview in Cambodia. Can we please move this back to K1 related forums? Obviously I would mention Cambodia in my topic, that is where we applied. There are plenty of country specific topics within K1 forums that do not and should not get moved to regional discussions. I do not mean to be difficult with you but this is urgent due to the legnth of time it takes to receive this document if it is necessary. The best way for me to receive an accurate answer is within the K1 forums.

Thank you.

There is no such thing as "Engagement approval" and "engagement certificate".

The reason you hear this is that, if you get engaged the local authority wants you to ask them for permission = equal to bribery $$$.

So now getting married in Cambodia is very difficult due to BS requirements from Cambodia, many people tend to do K-1, that raise a question of this issue.

You will be fine.

Please report back after the interview, I would like to hear your experience. Hope this will relax you a bit.

My fiance has many friends who failed the interview and did not have this "form". She also has several co-workers who ALL have this form. For some reason those people are telling her it is manditory. The problem is, we were engaged last year and if we get this "form" now it will be verified after the fact. I tend to agree with you ont he fact that this is a type of BS bribery, the government center that told us they can make the form wants 300$ US for this. I almost wonder if paying this 300$ bribe is worth it just to be safe. I would hate to fail the interview over something stupid.

*** Moved back to K1 by OP request. We find that regional questions usually get more and better qualified answers in the regional forum- because engagement certs really do not exist in other countries and you may get "wrong" answers from members from other countries- but it is up to you. *****

If you honestly feel that I may receive a better answer in regional then it is fine with me to leave it there. You know better than I. I appreciate your help greatly. Sorry if I came off a bit strong, it was not my intention. :)

Don;t worry about it, I have heard much worse :) Let's leave it here for a day or so and then if you want, PM me and I'll move it back. It works in both forums so whichever you want is fine.

My fiance has her interview in Cambodia at the end of September. We did the whole engagement ceremony out there with the police and all and received no such paper. This is just a ploy to get more money. I paid 300 for the right to throw the party. If you are really worried email the embassy yourself and they will get back to you within 24 hours. Just have all the forms on packet 4 and you'll be fine. The US Embassy knows about the corruption there and will tell you that the form is not needed.

Interesting, you said that you had the police at your engagement, or was it just approval before your ceremony? For my engagement we just told some people at a government building within the sangkat that we were going to have a party. I do not know the specifics of this since I am not a fluent speaker and it was handled by my to-be sister in law.

I have been told the same thing to get an engagement certificate, I don't know why people here in Cambodia just keep spreading this bad rumour. If there is any specific requirement, it will be listed on the instruction or checklist form provided by the embassy. I have to agree with Jps4427 that it's just a ploy of some people who want to make money through this.

Really you paid 300 to be authorized to hold the engagement party? where does your cambodian fiance live?.....when my American fiance and I got engaged, we did the ceremony at my home in Phnom Penh, no one from the local authority come to ask us for money. The only thing we do is to report to them at first that we need to use some extra space that belongs to the public road.

This has been interesting to me for some time. I too kept reading that an engagement certificate was important, but I was educated enough to know that a "legal form" was not available for this. So, it's a money scam it seems. The USA embassy knowing this then, does it cause any problems in the interview? Since obviously all the certificate is really proof of is that the petitioner was scammed which I would think would raise an eyebrow or two.
