New Immigration Policy Controversy in Arizona

Excerpt From CBS/AP

In Arizona, which passed one of the nation's toughest anti-immigration laws, Gov. Jan Brewer signed an executive order Wednesday directing state agencies to deny driver's licenses and other public benefits to illegal immigrants who obtain work authorizations under a new federal program.

Gov. Brewer said the federal program doesn't give immigrants legal status and she's following the intent of the current state law denying public benefits to them.

To be eligible for the federal program, called "Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals" immigrants must prove they arrived in the United States before they turned 16, are 30 or younger, have been living in the country at least five years and are in school or graduated or served in the military. They cannot have been convicted of certain crimes or otherwise pose a safety threat.

Initial concerns that federal authorities might take a tough approach on applications or that a Republican presidential victory could unravel applicants' gains have largely been pushed aside by massive interest from thousands of young people eager to work, except in Arizona, where the law is estimated to affect around 80,000 people.

A spokesman for Gov. Brewer told the Arizona Republic that Brewer's order is intended to cut through the confusion created by the act.

"As the (Department of Homeland Security) has said repeatedly ... these individuals do not have lawful status," Brewer spokesman Matthew Benson told the Republic. "They are able to remain in the country and not be deported, and not be prosecuted, but they do not have lawful status."

Huh? The purpose of the document (EAD) is to allow them to work legally, and that includes paying taxes. What are you talking about?

Well, they say it's controversial in the national news, but almost everybody I've talked with (and I'm in Tucson AZ) is glad she did this. If the president doesn't want us to enforce our national immigration laws, that's his choice. The Gov. of Arizona doesn't want people choosing to stay here illegally to receive state benefits (which cost our state lots of money). Nobody here believes her choice is unreasonable. The president himself said this isn't a path to citizenship, just a promise to stop deporting them for a set time. I believe everybody here (in Arizona and on VJ) favors doing things the legal way, and not rewarding the people that do it the illegal way (especially if it negatively affects people doing it the honest way).

These were children brought over. Not an adult decision. This is not about the parents. How can you blame these kids???

That is like saying you were asked to be born.... Do you think they like their situation?

And if they are illegal, why are they getting state benefits?

Walk. Hitchhike. Ride the bus. Catch a ride with somebody else. Maybe even use a foreign driver's license. How were they getting to work before, when they were working illegally? Arizona is not Mississippi, you know!

Correct. They were children BROUGHT here. Neither of them are USCs. I'm not blaming the children for being brought here. There is a difference between 'not blaming' and 'rewarding' though. Some of these children are now adults, and must make adult choices. You asked me if I thought they liked this situation? No, I don't think they like their current situation. It is, however, their adult choice to remain here ILLEGALLY!

You do realize all of us here are illegal aliens? Are you native american by chance? If you are, then I digress as none of us truly belong here. We took over this land by decimating the indigenous people. I guess we have bigger guns and that makes a difference.

Is that what legal is about?

I am not sure what your extreme bias towards this group of people is. I am not even sure if we are talking about the same group of people.

Yay Arizona !! I'm so happy to see this, really !

Joke em if they can't take a ####.

As for the 'hue and outcry' - look - if'n you qualify under 'the program' is best to actually join the US Army, get citizenship in boot camp (so, tell yer buddies all about it !) and

forget about having a life in Arizona. Go La, already meh.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Denying somebody benefits that they are not entitled to is not a punishment or judgment against them personally, its just our impartial way of handling it! It would be wrong if they were denied benefits for which they qualify. It would be wrong if they were denied because of gender, race, ect ect. This specific ruling applies evenly, and to all people . . . regardless of where they illegally came from. I know that most cases here are from Mexico, and my disapproval of our presidents actions (and approval of my states actions) might incorrectly come across as racist. Thats not the case.

If Arizona is so against illegal aliens? Why do Arizonans hire them? If there is no money to be made legally, how is it that they can afford to stay there??
