Change of name during Green Card Interview???

Have anyone had the opportunity to change their married name at the green card interview? For instance, did the IO asked any of you if you want to have your married name on the green card even though you filled all the applications with our maiden name?

I have heard some people have had this opportunity, but just a few.

In VA, where I live, our marriage certificate did not come with my married name because they say that they just use your name according to your birth certificate and in order to change your name in court, you have to be a permanent resident.. So, to change my name in court I will have to have my Green card first. That would be sweet if I could just change my name at the interview without having to fill out the I-90 form.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

07/14/2012 - Mailed I-130 and I-485 packages

07/23/2012 - USCIS cashed our checks

07/25/2012 - Received Notice of Action letters for I-130, I-485 and I-765.

07/25/2012 - Received ASC Appointment Notice for biometrics. Biometrics scheduled for 08/14/2012 in Norfolk, VA.

08/07/2012 - Successful Walk-in Early Biometrics taken at a different ASC location (Alexandria, VA).

08/13/2012 - Called the FBI to ask about biometrics. USCIS have them!

08/27/2012 - Received Interview letter, Interview scheduled on Sept. 28th.

09/21/2012 - EAD card under production

09/28/2012 - Interview in Norfolk - No decision yet :(

09/29/2012 - EAD card received in the mail.

10/01/2012 - Case status updated - Approved! YAY!!!!

10/03/1012 - Card Production!!!!! YAAAAAAY!!!

10/10/2012 - Green Card received in the mail! It's beautiful!!!


ROC

7/7/14 - Package sent to Vermont Service Center

7/14/14 - USCIS received Package, USCIS sent first NOA

7/22/14 - ASC Appointment Notice Letter

8/15/14 - Biometrics done

The person you spoke to was wrong. You could have filled in the GC application with your married name and the GC would come in your married name. That I-90 application to change or replace a GC is rather expensive.

Yes, I would bring this up at your interview and ask to have the name changed then. Hopefully it works for you. Good luck.

If they will not let you change your name at the interview, I would wait and file the ROC in your married name. No cost and it might happen before you get the I-90 results :blush: . We were not asked about the name at our interview. The GC came in the name we put on the form--the wife's maiden name. My bet is that they will not be able to change the name. You have two more chances to deal with USCIS to change the name. 1) at ROC and 2) at Naturalization. Why spend the money on filing the I-90?

(Day 283) 09/24/12: Interview at US Consulate – Approved!

(Day 287) 09/28/12: Visa Received & Immediately entered US using Visa

(Day 290) 10/01/12: Social Security Card sent automatically

Removal of Conditions CR1 / CR2
(Day 1) 07/28/14: Application sent.
(Day 135) 12/10/14: ROC Approved!
(Day 143) 12/18/14: 10 year GC received (IR1 / IR2)

Naturalization:
(Day 1) 06/30/15: Application sent.
(Day 210) 01/26/16: Interview and Oath Ceremony. DONE!

***Son and I became US Citizens 01/26/16***

(Day 1) 01/27/16: Applied for my U.S. Passport
(Day 14) 02/10/16: Passport Book & Cert of Naturalization received

(Day 1) 03/16/16: Applied for U.S. Passport for son

(Day 22) 04/07/16: Passport book and original docs received...(Card rec'd 04/16/16)

N-600 for child age 9
(Day 1) 01/27/16: Application sent

(Day 12) 02/08/16: NOA received

(Day 23) 02/19/16: Case received at local office

(Day 88) 04/23/16: In line for oath scheduling *Called USCIS to inquire about why there is an oath required for a child under 14. They sent a service request to the field office.

(Day 95) 04/30/16: Received letter from field office to say no oath necessary and that they would mail the certificate.
(Day 106) 05/11/16: Cert of Citizenship received by registered mail (they never sent tracking. case status was never updated either)
