I did a forum search for fee waiver for the N400 and there seems to be a consensus that fee waivers are not available for citizenship since it is a choice. You could wait until you have the $$ and then apply. Try searching through otehr results if you search for 'fee waiver' in this citiznship forum.

I am by no means the final answer, just posting what I found in a search.

Yes there is a fee waiver called i-912. I applied for citizenship already just waiting for bio appt. But my friend and her husband is in a financial mess right now. My husband and i couldnt lend them money right now and her 10 year gc is expiring in 9 months. So i search if there is a waiver for fee and according to uscis website there is. I help her file we send her application for n-400 and the fee waiver just last week. Thats why i was asking if anyone has done it before and how lOng before she will hear from them.

I-912 is fee waiver ONLY for specific forms where the applican or the petitioner MUST file like I-751 to remove conditions, or to renew the 10 years GC.

I-912 is NOT for optional benefits like N-400.

This was indicated cleary at USCIS : http://www.uscis.gov...00045f3d6a1RCRD

Quoting " 1. General Fee Waivers: I-90, I-191, I-751, I-765 (excluding category ©(33)), I-817, I-821, I-881, N-300, N-336, N-400, N-470, N-565, N-600, N-600K)

If your friend want to RENEW THE GC, they can send a waiver request with the required documents at stated on the webpage. If your friend wants to file for citizenship, no waiver is available again since its optional benefit.

If the application was sent already , I expect it to be returned back once they get to it.

Hope that helps.

Read Again, the n-400 is not excluded for a fee waiver. It says excluding category c(33), notice the comma after (33)? Also I am not asking if there is a fee waiver for n-400 for I know there is. What I was asking is if anybody else applied for it and how long they hear back from USCIS. Yes, there is a chance her packet will be return but not because there is no fee waiver for n-400 but it will be because they did not approve her application for a fee waiver.

You should get a decision on your request within 90-180 days. Just sit tight...

I apologize, I looked into the I-912 instructions, and I found that you can request waiver for N-400 fees (I learned something new now :))

I am not aware of anyone who did it, but I suggest for sure to read the guidelines and income requirements (if you did not)

Good luck.

hello

i am hoping this post will clarify little bit....i did apply for N400 and a fee waiver and the only reason why i did it is on the i-912 instruction it says that if you get food stamps you can get a fee waiver of course if you make less than 150% poverty bla bla bla also im really broke :) ...whitin 12 to 14 days i haven't received anything so i called uscis 800 number and told him what sup ppl ? did i do anything wrong or they just didn't open the package yet? politely!!! (by the way i was tracking it thru usps express mail so i know they had it sitting there for a couple of days and i also have E-notification where they send you email and text when they open it and scan it ... but i didnt get anything so i called and asked and they were very professionally pleasant and helpful ..the first guy on the phone also pleasant will assess the issue but he deasnt have access to the database so he is gonna transfer you to the escalation team (the A team :) after giving the my information they were able to give me a notice number now i can check online where it clearly said fee has been waived and we mailed you a notice for further bla bla bla ...i would say call you have nothing to lose :) and good luck

Thanks for the info. Its too early to call uscis then since they just receive the apllication august 24. She is not getting any government benefits but last year and this year their income is definitely below the poverty limit so we used that to apply for her fee waiver. Just a question though did you ever received anything from uscis after you called them? Like an approval letter for the application and fee waiver?

Just wanted to report as it might help someone, that I filed for a fee waiver for N400, form for citizenship, in the first week of December and I just got the text from USCIS on the 23rd that my fee has been waived. This is amazing and I am so grateful. I put in my tax return from last year and wrote a letter telling them how I had been laid off and facing financial hardship temporarily. I hope to be back on my feet within a year. Extremely simple, quick and straightforward. Thank you USCIS!
