Hello.

I am Canadian. My husband is half-Canadian and half-American. We have had our I-130 approved and our paperwork is now with the NVC. We are living in Canada while the paperwork is processed. Does anyone know whether I can enter the USA for 3 days while my paperwork is being processed? Has anyone done this? When I ask border services, they say that they don's suggest it, but I want to go and spend Thanksgiving with my husband's family in San Diego for three days. Any thoughts or numbers that I should call?

Thanks!

You are allowed to cross the border temporarily, but only if you prove to the border agent that you are not trying to come across to stay. This is generally done by bringing a copy of your NOA2 (showing that you're going through the correct legal channels) and evidence showing that you still have ties in Canada (e.g. lease or mortgage, letter from your employer stating when you are expected back, having a return ticket). There are no guarantees that you will be allowed into the US, but most Canadians are able to cross the border relatively freely while their paperwork is being processed.

EDIT: And don't bring more possessions than you would need for a 3 day trip.
