student OPT to family based GC- question about number of days for the interview

Hi,

I am on OPT and my wedding is in less than two weeks. I will be sending all the forms & documents (I130, I485, I864, I765 etc.) to Chicago locker box by first week of October. Could some on please tell me typically how many days after the submission the interview day is? My spouse who is a US citizen, will be on travel from last week of Dec to second week of Jan. I am now worried what if our interview date falls in that period.

It is very unlikely you would get an interview so fast that it would fall in the period when your spouse is traveling. The average processing times for AOS are around 4-6 months from filing the paperwork. If your interview was scheduled for that time, you can always try to reschedule it, though it is a bit risky and not recommended.

03/21/2011 - Day 18 - Biometrics letter received, biometrics scheduled for 04/14/2011

03/31/2011 - Day 28 - Successful walk-in biometrics done

05/12/2011 - Day 70 - EAD Arrived, issued on 05/02

06/14/2011 - Day 103 - E-mail notice: Interview letter mailed, interview scheduled for July 20th

07/20/2011 - Day 139 - Interview at Federal Plaza USCIS location

07/22/2011 - Day 141 - E-mail approval notice received (Card production)

It does appear that there is a chance that your interview will be during the time your spouse is traveling. You can always delay sending paperwork or adjust the travel schedule.

It depends on your local office. People going to the Los Angeles,CA office can easily wait 4 months or more. As you can see from my timeline, it only took about 2.5 months for us at the Sacramento,CA office.

6/19/2012 - Biometrics completed.

7/02/2012 - Text/email/hard copy notification of interview.

7/30/2012 - EAD card production ordered.

8/02/2012 - Interview @ 2:00

8/02/2012 - Email notification of GC production at 5:30pm

8/07/2012 - Second GC production email

8/07/2012 - EAD received.

8/08/2012 - GC mailed.

8/09/2012 - Welcome letter and I-130 approval letter received.

8/10/2012 - Green card received. :)

It depends on your local office. People going to the Los Angeles,CA office can easily wait 4 months or more. As you can see from my timeline, it only took about 2.5 months for us at the Sacramento,CA office.

Thank you all for the replies. These will definitely help to make some decisions. How do I figure out what is my office? I was of opinion that as I am living in Los Angeles (In fact, I live less than 10 miles from the LA field office), my local office will be Los Angeles field office. Will I know about the interview date at least one month before the interview? If that is the case, we will have some time to change the travel plans.

Yes, they will send you the notice around 1 month ahead so you can reschedule your plan.

If you live that close to the LA field office, then that is most likely where your case will be posted. AOS cases are adjudicated in 4 to 6 months on an average, though many of us were lucky enough to be done in three months.

You will receive your interview notice at least five weeks before then scheduled date (going by experience of others on this site) and that should give you enough time to either reschedule travel plans (most highly recommended) or reschedule the interview itself (not recommended, means more waiting time for a second date).

You are best advised to file your papers now, finish the AOS process and then make travelm plans.

All the best on your wedding and your immigration journey!
