This had me actually laughing as I have relatives that think they are rich.... But they're not.....

It's silly isn't it? There's nothing you can do to save these people.

I do not understand how anyone can look at the Oil disaster in the Gulf and think the risks are worth it. My mind does not work that way.

After a short time, everyone started complaining about the moratorium on drilling, they didn't care about the tar balls or death of pelicans/dolphins/turtles etc. Obama was to blame, he was inhibiting job growth and blah blah blah. Never mind BP destroying our sea and people's way of life, drill baby drill. What is it with people and 5 second memories? :bonk:

The only problem with that is that the introduction of firearms increased army sizes. Much easier to train a peasant to operate a firearm than say a longbow.

Not even close. Today's Soldiers sailors and Airmen, are highly trained educated men and women, many of whom operate complex pieces of modern equipment. that span many many different specialties.

Armies of old had pretty much two specialties. Infantry and quartermaster.

Operating and caring for an M-16 or Squad Automatic weapon etc etc is much more skill intense than caring for and using a sword or cross bow.

Actually Army sizes as a percentage of population have always varied greatly throughout history, independent of weaponry.

I didn't think such a ridiculous comment deserved an answer. Amount of training has -0- to do with it. Effectiveness is what matters, fireams made obsolete the entire medival system.

I can see history is not a strong feature of VJ.

Joseph Lister didn't discover antibiotics. He discovered mouthwash.

LMAO... 2 different statements about medical advancements. Hence the little dot between them called a period.

Joseph Lister transformed surgical procedures by introducing aseptic techniques. He used carbolic acid to sterilize his instruments. About 10 years later, 2 other doctors introduced Listerine, named after Dr. Lister.

No credits given to advancement of medical practices to save all the people from gunshot wounds?

Joseph Lister comes to mind. Discoveries of antibiotics.

Lister was antiseptic surgery. Alexander Flemming is considered the father of Antibiotics

Training has everything to do with the military. Many examples in history of a well armed force being completely over run by an force using lesser firepower that used better tactics and training

A lot went into ending the Middle ages. It was not just guns . The plague had a lot to do with it as did as did an increase in commerce, education .

Certainly the advent of firearms played a role, but arguably they were not the single cause or even the most important.

Certainly the advent of firearms played a role, but arguably they were not the single cause or even the most important.

Isandlwana on 22 January 1879 being a prime example, where the superior numbers of the Zulu overwhelm and decimate a force of well-equipped British and Colonial troops, due to the British officers not following the basics of their training.

On the other hand, and at the same time, 4000 Zulu attacked the British post at Rorke's Drift, defended by 139 British soldiers. There, the Zulu are repelled with horrific casualties, as the British, disciplined and well- led, kept it together and used their firepower to the best effect.

Same opponents, similar odds, diametrically opposite results, due solely to the appliance of training.

Seriously... You didn't get the memo they were 2 different statements either?

Gary and Alla said.....

Huge advances in society can be directly linked to advances in weapons technology for centuries.

To which I replied

No credits given to advancement of medical practices to save all the people from gunshot wounds?

Joseph Lister comes to mind. Discoveries of antibiotics.

This is not a statement saying Joseph Lister discovered antibiotics. Geeeez

2 statements citing advancement of medical practices.

#1 Joseph Lister, aseptic techniques regarding surgical practices.

#2 the discoveries of antibiotics.
