Hi everyone,

I was hoping someone here could answer this question, because the guy at the IRS apparently couldn't and told me I'd need to talk to an attorney of law.

I'm using my K-1 visa in a little over a week but wanted to wire some of my money down beforehand. As I don't have an SSN yet, I don't think I can get my own bank account, so I would have to send the money to an account under my fiancé's name and SSN. He's concerned that it'll look off to the IRS that he's suddenly getting a lot of extra money. Has anyone experienced issues doing this? Or can someone suggest a better idea to bring my money down safely? I can't wire money down once I've moved, myself, and will have to find someone else to do it then.

Hi there, have you considered Internet banking (mobile) ? It's an online account in which your bank will give you an ATM so you could make withdrawals in the US. I was successful to using this facility while I was in the US. I too have $16k deposit in my account before I move. I thought of this since I know it would be hard to send money in my own name.

AFAIK Bank of America will allow you to open an account without an SSN, but you will need to actually be there in person to open it up.

HSBC (Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation) has branches in Canada and also in the US, and all over the world, you might see if you can open an account with them.

I've sent money via wire transfer (SWIFT) from my bank to banks in other countries for a $25 fee, which is not bad at all. And yes, if you send over $10,000 or some amount suspiciously close to $10,000 the feds will be notified that you're sending money, but so what? There's no laws against those transfers, just the US feds will be told by the bank. So long as you're not involved in something nefarious there's no problem with it.

Now, if you transfer over $13,000 then there's a potential tax liability, but IANA(Tax)L so I am ignorant as to whether that should be a concern.

I like the idea about bringing either your checkbook or a cashier's check.

If I read this correctly you're concerned due to large amounts of money going into his account from yours? Normally I would say this could red flag your process as in trying to pay someone to get you here for a Visa. But Canada is not a country that is on the USA high fraud list so you are probably okay. Others gave you great advice on transfering.. I used Xoom alot when both now to send money to my fiancee and while I lived in Philippines. I would transfer money send money to my Philippines account from my USA account using Xoom... It worked I just had to created two different email addresses.

I agree on Xoom, it's the cheapest and fastest way and no hassle at all. We use it all the time.

Kinda sounding like I'm out of luck on sending money to my own account before my move, though, because I'm in Canada right now. Wish I had thought to try and get a bank account when I was visiting my fiancé in April.. Now I know why they say money is a big stressor.

I use Custom House---which is now owned by Western Union. Takes a bit to sign up, but its free. I have sent money over 10,000 with no problems at all. They initially give you a low amount u can transfer-I just phoned them up and said I was transferring such an amount and they automatically increased it---but that was before they were bought out by Western Union. Give them a call http://www.customhouse.com/ If you wire $$$$ thewre are fees---but if you do a EFT, its free, but takes longer usually 4-5 BUSINESS days!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Alot of banks would allow you to open the account without SSN. I opened my account with FirstBank CO, Wells Fargo, and SSN was not required at that point.

You can wire the money under your name or write the check or demand draft.

All you have to keep the evidence of the money, like how it came, from where it came, etc. That is it!
