Did you read the thread? Websites were linked that state the salary for a certain position for a certain place. The US is a big place, so no one can say what an average salary is. Look at those websites linked.

I would say a median salary in a city like new york or los angeles would be about 30,000 a year and Thsts around 15 dollars an hour for 40 hour work week. that would just be basic living and not middle class. Middle class will be 2 people working and bringing home atleast 70,000 or more combined. If you live outside the city i guess you can do with making 60,000 for a middle class lifestyle.

In today's economic times... A good salary is when you have a job and can put food on your table.

The misconception that America is the land of milk and honey just isn't so.

Unemployment is high and the competition for jobs is great. It is a buyer's market for employees.

Don't worry so much about the salary. The emphasis would be finding a job. If you go into an interview with demands of a salary, you may just talk yourself out of the position as there will be another person in the file to talk to.

Good luck in your job hunt..!

I know this is subjective. I am just a new immigrant here in US. I have Computer background waiting for AOS & Green card. Can I know what is a DECENT salary here in US as a starter?

I dont have kids/dependents yet, me only and my hubby. Can someone give me a snapshot of decent salary in USA, means that its not LOW and not HIGH as well.

Thank you so much to those who will reply.

As a waiter/ress you can earn as little a $4 an hour plus tips.

As a worker in a factory you can earn as little as $9 an hour, sometimes less

If you have a look at www.indeed.com and start looking at the offerings you'll see what it's like for different jobs. I really truly depends on where you live.

Take a look at this link: http://swz.salary.com/SalaryWizard/LayoutScripts/Swzl_SelectCategory.aspx and select the job category that must closely match you. You can then select the job, the location in the US, the industry, the size of the organization, the years of experience etc...and you get a comprehensive salary overview.

Depends on:

Type of job

Location

If I lived in Kansas but was earning what the same job position in California would pay, I'd be loaded.

But if I lived in California, I wouldn't be loaded.

While support engineer and help desk are two completely different realms of an IT dept in my mind, this is from my experience before I changed states and fields.

Help desk - $12-17 per hour

Desk Side Support - $17-30 per hour

Remote Field Support - $23-30 per hour

All of these salaries were from long term contract positions with a fortune 500 company that I did IT support for 7 years before I became an employee and changed dept.

Also, these salaries are based on living and working in San Diego, Ca. Your experience may vary.

Good luck

thank you so much..appreciate it!!

wow ..thank you guys for your input. Really really appreciate it! especially I'm a new immigrant here..that certainly helps a lot about my expectations here in America.

Can I know too what are the benefits like if I retire after certain age, do I get like PENSION from government? Sorry for my newbie questions.. I am just not familiar yet with how things will be if I fully decided to live and stay for good or even become an American by Naturalization...

To the OP, all of the speculative salary averages (which are in reality, regionally specific), assume that you can actually land the job. Given the current unemployment rates in the US, you might find it very difficult to land a job; given your unverifiable experience. My experience in hiring employees in another field, will offer that hiring foreign nationals without US work experience is very difficult indeed. You may need to start at a lower rate, build verifiable experience and move up.

Nothing against you for asking the questions but where is your spouse with you having all of these questions?

I would think that since he lives in the region you will be moving too he would be able to answer these questions much better then strangers could.

Also, regarding pension and what not you will want to start your own traditional IRA fund once you get a bank account and fund it every year along with contributing to your 401K, if you get one.

You will have to discuss your benefits directly with your potential employer to get that information as it will vary way to much company to company for any of us to even fathom a guess.

There are no guarantees implied or otherwise with getting or keeping a job here in the US! It is all 'At Will' employment and can be terminated at any given time without a reason.

OP please update your timeline with correct information. As you are getting tons of help here, you can help others by accurately filling in your timeline.

:time:

Also, correct the Texas Service Center, you most certainly did not get your case adjudicated there. This causes confusion for other new members.
