Can someone confirm that I can attend my fiancee's interview at HCMC? I just want to be sure before I book the ticket here. I don't want to waste my trip if I can go in to support her and anwers any questions if needed. I'm only able to leave work for a week so I gotta make this one count. Thanks

Yes you can.. As of last year the consulate allows USC's to accompany the SO to the interview and may ask you questions.

You can attend the interview if you like but I would advise you not to do so. As others have already said, if you attend the interview, they may call you up for questioning as well. I think there is no need to add extra stress over an already stressful thing. Try to make the interview as short and painless as possible. Some may disagree with me but I think that is the best thing to do. Good luck :)

I really disagree Carrick... Being there shows how important this is and allows them the opportunity to resolve any questions they may have...

I think it depends on the couple. My wife's English was very basic when she went to the interview. I knew every word that was in her English vocabulary, so I had to carefully phrase every spoken sentence to make sure she would understand it. Anything more deep than casual conversation required Google translate and the Kim Tu Dien.

Now, we had more than a year between the first meeting and the interview, plus five trips I made to Vietnam, and we chatted on Yahoo for at least two hours every day, so we had some very deep conversations. But those conversations took a lot of time and patience, and a lot of online translations. I could answer practically any question a CO could have asked me about her, and she could do the same for me. The problem would have been if the CO had asked me to ask her a complicated question in English. It might not have been possible for me to construct a sentence that asked what the CO wanted to know using the limited words in her vocabulary. I could very easily have seen us getting shot down for "no common language".

We had some of the classic red flags, like being introduced by a family member, etc. I figured I addressed those adequately when I front loaded the petition. We compensated in other areas where we had the chance, like having a big blowout engagement party, and renting a big bus to take the whole family on a little vacation to Hoi An and Da Nang. But I knew all along that language was our biggest weakness. My biggest fear during the interview was that they'd call me on my cell phone and ask me to come inside the consulate, because I remember that happening to another VJ member a few years ago. If they had allowed petitioners to attend the interview back then I would have opted not to.

My wife's English has improved tremendously since then because she speaks English every day. Our relationship is also stronger than ever. I knew language wasn't a big issue for us because we did manage to communicate whatever we wanted to say to each other. I would have no problem convincing a CO today that we share a common language, but I don't think I could have done back in December '09 when she had her interview.

I went with my fiancé. They grilled me, they grilled her. We passed. She's now my wife. I'd recommend you go but you certainly don't have to. My wife's friend just passed and her fiancé was not there. It's really up to you.

Care to share your thoughts on "being grilled"? Did they ask any questions that off the charts? We've looked through some questions that were posted by some of the members here, and to me, those questions are just standard.

what kind of underwear does he wear? What side of the bed does he sleep? What is his boss name? What kind of car does he drive? When the first time you were intimate? where?

i went with my wife. they only asked her 3 questions and me one or two questions. very basic stuff. i think that it really depends...if they suspect something, then you being their may give them the opportunity to grill both of you, and they may be satisfied and give a pink. if only her, then they may give a blue. of course, every situation is different, but if both of you know each other well and communicate well then really i think that it is a plus at the interview. of course, these things would be good for the marriage regardless of whether you guys are from different countries.

i have heard of them asking stuff like how much was the cab fare, what color was the room you slept in last night, what color was the sheets?

I wrote a post back in July or August 2011 on the VN forum. It had most of my questions on there. Some of the harder ones were...

What color are the walls in your fiancée house?

What color are the bed sheets?

Who sleeps closest to the door?

Describe items in her room?

What did you guys eat last night?

Who ordered what?

How did you guys get here this morning?

Who paid for the taxi?

How much was it?

Did you do a dam hoi?

Where did your wife go to high school?

What is your wife's favorite color?

What is your husbands favorite movie?

Where did your husband go to college?
