I emailed the Rio consulate and asked them what the required as evidence of income. I even explained to them that I have a different employer this year due to the whole contract situation and heres the response I received:

-------------------------

Dear Sir or Madam:

We just request the last income tax and a proof of citizenship. We do not request job letter.

So, I'll ask my question just one more time in hopes someone knows the answer: Does the amount I put on my I134 for yearly salary have to equal my last tax return? I totaled what I earned this year and its a good bit higher than last year. There is no way of knowing if i will earn the same amount next year. In this case is it okay to state that this is my yearly salary? I know they dont request an employer letter but if the amount on I134 is higher than the tax return, they should atleast see proof right?

Paul,

I might be wrong here, but isn't your income tax return what you'll use as proof of how much you've earned last year? So I think you should state the same value on your form. Unless you are able to provide other evidence of your income.

Thats the thing Jajo, the consulate in Rio only wants last years tax return. But since I made more this year, is an un-notarized letter from my employer enough to prove my earnings this year? I dont want them to think I am lying or anything and if they arent going to look at the employer letter, how will it look? I still dont meet the requirements because I only work for half the year, as Ive explained on this forum. I will work for my employer one more year because I am going to Brazil this winter but my salary for next year isnt set in stone. Im better off this year than last and would like to show it. Any suggestions?

Paul,

I'd go with YuAndDan said:

Your tax returns will indicate what you make yearly that is why you want to provide past 3 years tax transcripts.

We are dealing with bureaucrats here, people that follow rules and are not very willing and/or used to think outside the box.

they were only interested in seeing tax returns and W-2s.

You also got pretty good advice from some other VJers.

If you can't provide tax return that proves you made more than 125% above poverty line, I'd go with a co-sponsor.

Why make things more complicated than they need to be? I read a lot of posts (here and other places) saying that the thing the CO pays more attention to here is the affidavit of suport. Play it safe, you can show the letter from your employer, but back it up with a co-sponsor.

Good luck.

If I were you I'd rather be safe than sorry! So I'd bring everything that I can to prove how much you make now. I also think you should try and move this thread to the Latin America forum, as more people who have gone thru K1 in Rio post there. They'll probably be more helpful!
