Hello everyone! I got my work authorization card last week and I am anxious to start working and do something besides staying home but I read on here that even with a work permit can't work or apply for driver's license wich sucks because if I get a job I dont have anybody to take me :/ . I'll appreciate a clear answer. Thank you.

Of course you can work with a work permit. What is the point, otherwise?

As far as DL, most states allow you to get a DL with an EAD, but not all. How you get to work is different from ability to work, and USCIS can't guarantee your mode of transport to work :) What state are you in?

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

We're in Texas and here you can get a Driver's Lisence Learner's permit and take the driving test as long as you're in status. if you have the EAD they'll issue you a Texas DL that expires the same date the EAD expires.

You can get a state issued ID or drivers license. But once you get your EAD card you need to take it along with your passport and other documents to the social security office and obtain a social security card. When issued it will say for work purposes only. Once you get your residency you can get an updated card with those restrictions removed. Most states require a social security number for a drivers license but for an ID card just a passport with a valid I-94 (ID will expire when I94 expires) you will need the social security number when working anyway.

My wife got her driver's license in Ga with her EAD and current passport. One of the forms used to prove where she lived was the I-797c that we received for AOS application.

I know each state is a little different. But with EAD, that proves you are here legally. Double check with Dept of Motor Vehicle website for your state for Alien resident requirements.

:time: with EAD info

Here is a link to Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles

For you to get your license you need to take eye exam, pass knowledge test, and pass driver test (unless you have an out of country license that is reciprocal)

You also need these documents (link to IBMV)

EAD will prove your lawful status

Good luck with getting your driver's license.. You now have all the information you need.good.gif

Looks like you can take your EAD and even bring your NOA from filing the I-485 with you and you should be able to get a license.

I live in Indiana

BMV/DMV in Indiana accepts EAD - whichever permit or license you get will be valid until it expires.

I'm in Indiana as well. If you haven't got a foreign driver's license already, you'll have to start out with a learner's permit for 180 days. It requires that someone with a valid driver's license is always with you in the vehicle for those 180 days.

Soooo.. A scooter! 49cc or below does NOT require a driver's license in Indiana. I drive it to/from work and whenever my husband's home, I drive the car. You can only drive around in the state of Indiana with a learner's permit. I'm still limited to mostly this area but it is a way of getting to and from work without relying on others. To be honest, it is inexpensive as well and a good way of getting familiar with traffic.

Also, if you haven't gotten your social security card yet, you will need that in addition to the other documents.

Good luck!

Darnell, the OP was talking about she can't work with an EAD because she couldn't get a driver's license. (she doesn't have anybody to take her to work)

The explanations are in regards to getting a driver's license in Indiana.

At least that is the way I interpreted itblink.gif

Have heard about bus/train...when I came in America I ONLY used those to go to school or work w/no problem.

Go online search how to commute around your state/area. Problem solved!!!

oh really? what if you live in remote area of farm country...? city population 750 people. No public transportation within 100 miles....
