we are in the process to apply for green card for me and our kid so we checked the forms we should fill hence we realized that some doc. needs the SSN for my wife like form I 864 so my wife went to the US embassy to issue the social security number and after she filled the SSN form she asked the officer when can she receive the SSN ? he told her : After six months up to one year !!!

My query is if the social security number indispensable to apply for green card for me and our kid ? are there any way else to speed up the process ?
