I ran a quick google search and was pointed to ehow.com. Apparently since 2010 it costs $1000 to file for it, I'm hoping that perhaps some people in here have gone through this process, my AOS interview is scheduled for September 13, me and my wife were hoping to go visit my family in Mexico a week after the interview. Assuming and really really hoping that we get approved right on the spot. I read on another thread that the IO could stamp it for you if you explained to him the predicament you are in, then i read that they don't do it anymore and that you have to make an appointment to go back and get your passport stamped. Is this free or does it actually cost $1000? I mean we want to go visit my family but we'd rather wait for the GC to come. Which is accurate or what's the actual process, any input would be greatly appreciated. :)

AOS costs around 1000 dollars, maybe the people who qouted that price weren't being clear. The stamp itself is usually just given at the interview(that's approved on the spot) because it'll take a little time to get the actual greencard in mail. Only when submitting AOS you pay a fee, not at interview. It's free. Considering that you already paid, I'd just say it's included :)

K1 process, October 2010 > POE, July 2011

I-129F approved in 180 days from NOA1 date. (195 days from filing to NOA2 in hand)

Interview took 224 days from I-129F NOA1 date. (241 days from filing petition until visa in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until POE: 285 days

AOS process, December 2011 > July 2012

EAD/AP Approval took 51 days from NOA1 date to email update. (77 days from filing until EAD/AP in hand)

AOS Approval took 206 days from NOA1 date to email update. (231 days from filing until greencard in hand)

Ahh now it makes sense, for a moment i was like "Well i miss my family but i think it can wait a few more weeks". Thank you for the reply, I will mention it to the IO, as long as we are approved of course.

Yeah, if the interviewing officer doesn't automatically think of it/stamp it, you can mention that you both are planning on visiting your family in Mexico and dread that the greencard won't be there in time. Just remember to be polite about it. Good luck on your upcoming interview and and enjoy your trip :)

yea, they definitely meant the green card cost around $1000

coz I-551 is the code for green card, just like I-512 form refers to advance parole.

Just be aware that it is not common practice to give out the stamp anymore, even when approved on the spot. It might be possible if you are approved right then and there and explain to them your situation, but there is no guarantee. For what it is worth, my husband was approved on the spot at our interview and his card arrived in our mailbox only 8 days later.

Yes i read in another thread that I'd have to schedule an "infoPass" and that's the other reason why i asked if i could have it stamped on the spot because the place we are going for our interview is a 2hour drive each way. Don't get me wrong, if it means that we can leave the country shortly after the interview, we'll do it but gas isn't cheap. Or perhaps schedule an infopass for a couple of hours after the interview??

Has anyone had any recent experiences with the 1-551 Stamp? The idea of making an INFOPASS appointment for the same day is out because there are none available so i guess, talking nicely to the IO and begging for it is my only choice then again maybe we won't be approved on the spot, not a whole lot i can do but wait. Any input or tips would be great.

If you are approved on the spot, then explain your situation and ask the IO if you could possibly get the stamp so you can travel right away. I do not think you would need to make a separate Infopass appointment. The worst that could happen is they say no, and you wait until the green card arrives in your mailbox. It should not take too long for you to receive it, so that is a plus side for your situation. You may only have to delay your trip by a few days.

Agree with Jay-Kay but also remember that many IOs do not/cannot approve on the spot. Our approval took 10 days and that is not unusual.

I read some reviews about the office in Fresno and they were all positive, so i'm keeping a positive attitude as well. There really isn't a reason why we shouldn't be approved the same day but like you said, I know some IOs don't approve on the stop.

From my understanding, not all IOs are even allowed to - some cannot approve without supervisor approval (newer IOs, I'd guess, though I don't really know), which they may or may not get the same day.

Fingers crossed for you!

Thank you, I am rather excited about finally getting this over with at least for a little while. A little bit nervous just like pretty much everyone i've read about but gonna keep a positive attitude and wait for the big day. Will keep updating, this place has been of great help.
