Sorry, bro, but that's one of the things that makes for good campaigning to capture the women vote but it doesn't really hold water. It's like saying that public employees get paid more than private sector employees - you know, the old argument from the other side of the aisle. And both are right - overall. But overall, these public employees, for example, are also better educated which accounts for their overall better compensation. There are reasons other than gender that explain the overall pay gap between men and women as well.

How do they calculate this number? 0.77

Is it the average of all men and all women?

All men and women in the same industry? Holding the same job titles? Same responsibilities? How do they average it out across industries, some of which are clearly male dominated (construction, etc)?

Easy, they just make up something that seems believable.

According to this web site:

The wage gap is expressed as a percentage (e.g., in 2010, women earned 77.4% as much as men) and is calculated by dividing the median annual earnings for women by the median annual earnings for men.

In other words, it's a really stupid (and inaccurate) way to calculate wage disparity.

This assumes that men and women have the same jobs and positions in the same numbers, which is clearly not true.

How much of the alleged gap is due to occupational differences? Or the fact that women leave the workforce to have kids?

Or failure to negotiate a higher entry-level salary?

While I agree with your premise that this is merely campaigning, I don't see how you draw the conclusion that public sector employees are better educated than the private sector, nor do they garner higher wages for the most part. The money and brains are almost always in the private sector. The public sector is usually made up of the Mayor's drunk brother-in law and his cronies that can't hold down a real job, that is why they get the stigma of being overpaid, along with getting crazy benefits that no one else gets.

That's the calculation. Which is why this number is very misleading.

Right, if you look at comparable men and women - i.e. in the same industry, same education, grade levels, etc. - then there is no pay gap.
