I would like to join the Service.

I recently adjusted my status and I am now a conditional resident. My wife and I have been discussing this and I would like to join the service. I was thinking marines.

However as I have a wife and step kids I would like to stay on US soil and not stray too far away from them. I am 29 years old and didn't graduate high school in the US.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It would be tough at that age. Additionally, there is no guarantee you will stay on US soil, especially in the Marines.

The US Military has raised the standards compared to the past when anyone could get in. They are under financial scrutiny also.

If you really want answers, talk to a recruiter. Also remember that if you do indeed enlist, you go and do whatever they tell you, you become property of the USA.

"I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."

I've always wanted to serve this country in some aspect and now that I've finally adjusted my status it seems I've aged out of everything.

You didn't age out everything. You are still able to join the Army (up to 35) and the Navy (Up to 34). If you are joining the military, there is NEVER a guarantee to stay on US soil. Like you said you wanted to serve this country, so you more likely will get deployed, TDY (temporary dust assignment for weeks or even months) and relocate with your family every 3 years. You have to be willing to make those sacrifices or the military is not the right job for you. You can't even call it a job, it's a lifestyle. I don't understand that you don't wanna be to far away from your wife & step kids. Aren't the willing to move with you to your duty assignments?

Thanks for being so polite. Anyway, my wife has a good job and I would hate to upset that but she is fine with me joining the service. I think I'll head to a recruiting office sometime over the weekend and see what they offer.

We military spouses are willing so sacrifice for our partners jobs. Maybe, your wife can find a similar good job around your area, where you will be stationed. There's no need to be away from eachother, she just has to be willing. I would not know what to do with myself, if I would live far apart from my husband. And also, there are overseas assignments, that are pretty cool. You get paid to travel the world, believe me, it's amazing!

I think it's pretty crappy in basic, but I am not sure as my husband isn't enlisted he's an officer and gets paid different. My husband has been in the military for 7 years now and his pay isnt bad at all I would say, but I also dont know what he made in the beginning. You do get paid for your family members and get medical coverage. I am sure the recruiter knows more.
