We haven't chosen our wedding bands yet. We've looked online but we will probably buy them in the US. I want a band that will go well with my engagement ring, which is a three stone princess cut, but something that is not too fancy (I'm really simple about rings). Javier wants a simple band, I think white gold only but I think he needs to go try some on in order to get a feel for the one that he likes the most. I suspect the first week that we are in the US, we will be going to all the jewelry stores.

I also have to make an appointment with our caterer, our florist and find someone to do our cake. I'm also going to be printing and assembling our invites ASAP when we get back to the US, so I'm sure we will be heading to Hobby Lobby ASAP as well. I have my wedding notebook full of ideas but I need to put together some document of a timeline to get things done, because I am a KNOWN procrastinator! We fly to the US on the 18th of October, so after that we will be in wedding planning mode!!

Are you making your invites in both Spanish and English? We had two sets--ones in English for my people and ones in Spanish for his. I had played with ones that were bilingual, though.

Two sets... One in English and one in Spanish. Same with our programs. All signs/info will be in both languages because some of Javier's family don't know Enflish. We are also having a bilingual ceremony (except our vows will be in English, I don't feel comfy speaking them in Spanish).

Well, we hit a major snag. Nairobi embassy interviews are usually scheduled days/maybe a week out, but when we finally were able to access the scheduling website, there are no appointments until Nov. 5, which kind of puts a damper on the whole Nov. 3 tentative date. All of the plans are transferable, but I really don't want to have a wedding in January even a little bit. <sigh> We're going to give it a week or two to see whether an earlier appointment opens up, before formally postponing.

So, screeching halt on the wedding planning. Yay. :crying:

Oh boo :(

I hope something opens up for you soon :(

We're probably going to have a November interview (as long as they send packet 3 already!) but we're planning our big wedding to be in May... we have the option to postpone if necessary, but hopefully it won't come to that.

I really like a lot of the designs on Gemvara.com, and I think mine will come from there (not sure about his: we haven't discussed it yet). You can customize everything, and it's really fun to play with all of the different options!

Having a bit of drama with the potential photography company: the representative just kind of mentioned as a random aside at the end of my long meeting with her that another difference between the 2 packages they offer is that with the less expensive one (the one I wanted), it takes 4-6 months to get the photos afterward, and with the more expensive one, it's 4-6 weeks. This wasn't mentioned in any of the promotional materials: website, brochures, etc. Even the contract she gave me (which I haven't signed) says 4-6 weeks: when I questioned it, she replied that the 4-6 weeks is only for the other package. Um, yes, but where does it say that? This is a contract, right? Shouldn't it accurately state what it is that I'm agreeing to? I really love the photographer we picked and in general I'm fine with this company, but this whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth. Ugh. Of course, I'm generally just funneling all of my angst about things I *can't* control into my response to this, and it's not such a big deal, but annoying.

On the plus side, the music director at the church agreed to play the historic pipe organ for the ceremony, and she's really excited about it! She's an amazing musician, and one of the nicest people in the world, so I'm thrilled to pieces. Also, we seem to have settled on an invitation design that we both like! Although, of course, he says he wants his Ugandan name listed after his surname, for some reason, which will confuse the heck out of everyone, but I guess they (and I) will deal with it.

My wife and I did our bands through Gemvara and it worked out great. For the engagement ring we did a custom ring at The Natural Sapphire Company. We never had to set foot in a store. It's amazing what 3D printing has done to the jewelry business.

That's how I felt when we got our interview in October. I was freaking out thinking about a January wedding in the middle of a COLD Chicago winter. That's when my mom suggested the courthouse and then bigger ceremony/reception later... I always thought it would be weird but she convinced me because she wants me to have the wedding of my dreams (thankfully she is paying for those dreams, lol!) which is why we decided that way.

I totally feel you about a January wedding.... I HATE WINTER!

We are also having a bilingual ceremony (except our vows will be in English, I don't feel comfy speaking them in Spanish).

The pastor who performed our wedding did the translating for us. I read mine in English and Carlos read his in Spanish. He also sang a romantic song that was not translated. Everything the pastor said, he did in both languages. Those youtube vids of his services really gave us confidence in our ability to understand him well and his ability to communicate clearly. If you haven't yet picked your officiant, this is one way to find someone you like.

(For future reference--anyone marrying in a Spanish/English ceremony near Austin-His name is Carlos Alsina and he pastors at PRIMERA IGLESIA BAUTISTA. He was very accommodating and during the ceremony, a giant Daddy Long Legs fell on his Bible. He flipped it off there without missing a beat. You can't even see that happen in the video. It was everything I could do to keep from busting out laughing.)

We haven't chosen our officiant yet, I'm waiting until we are back in the US to do that.

Javier is a fluent English speaker and we agreed to say the vows in English, considering my Spanish is pretty much at a beginner's level. I have only learned Spanish from living in this country. The only reason we are doing a bilingual ceremony is to make everyone who is coming (especially his parents, who don't speak any English) understand what is being said and feel comfortable. I don't want them to feel lost and I want to feel that they are a part of our special day.

This reminds me that I really need to practice on my Spanish skills. My speaking ability is terrible!

My Wedding Dress came in almost two months early!!! Yeah, especially since they ordered the wrong one. Interview is this Thursday (praying hard), anyway our plans are coming along, hopefully he will POE in November, so we can still have our December wedding.

We have a tentative date for 20 Dec, which I realized the other day is 20.12.2012.. not going to forget that date! (fingers crossed I get my visa in time!) I picked the fabric for my dress today. Its going to be short, fairly simple, or as my cousin refers to it, 'hippy, casual' <_< the base colour is cream with some contrasting sheer gold overlay just under the bodice, around the neckline and a strip at the hem, here is nothing 'hippy' about it, she just doesn't like that I don't want the style she thinks I should have - *sigh* so glad I'm not having a big wedding. My flowers will be bright red roses - its just the 2 of us in Vegas, with an Elvis officiator, at the Harley Davidson cafe, and photos at the Neon Museum - I'm really excited about it, its simple, but exactly what I want. My fiance loves it, hes arranging the vows, music, transport, and he picked the venue and hotel. :)

I hope our civil wedding will be on May. I want to have like a italian dinner in the backyard of our home, full of flowers, candles and lights but very small. I have dreamt about having a lay back and spontaneos reception. And then AP permiting, go back to Curazao and have THE party with my friends in the beach.

Good luck to All!!
