We're requesting no gifts so we wont be registering. We're older and don't really need anything. I'm actually glad to be skipping this part. I remember going through it 25 years ago. My mom was there to help me back then. I lost her last year so she can't help me this time :crying:

I'm a little concerned about doing an outdoor wedding in January, but it's So Cal so chances are it will be nice. We'll rent tents if needed.

My previous experience was that the guy wants nothing to do with the planning anyway so him being away doesn't really make a difference

I don't think we're going to register. In the Italian culture (FYI, my family is Italian, that's why I bring that up... I am first generation Canadian), wedding gifts are generally an envelope of cash (Tom has a hard time wrapping his head around that one LOL) - we may do a small registry at somewhere like Target once I get down to FL, mostly to make his family/friends more comfortable. We're having a Jack and Jill shower in a couple of weeks in Toronto though, and the hosts just told everyone that cash is easiest, so that I don't have to worry about packing up more "stuff" to bring down to FL...

I understand you say its meaning full to have both. But it still doesnt make the second one a wedding. Youre already wed! I understand wanting to have a celebration with your family which is totally fine. but just dont call it a wedding, because its not, you are already wed. Your friends and family wont be seeing you becoming joint in marriage because you already are. VOW RENEWAL.

The Italy thing doesnt stand. Are you literally going to a courthouse to sign papers or will it be a ceremony, wherein you say your vows of commitment to each other?

Also can i ask you the same i did with who i quoted. How will you word your invitations to your friends and family? Will you tell them its a wedding? Because thats rude.

I am not doing it this way. It may be hard and stressful to sort a wedding in just a few months but its totally doable. And that way, my family and his will get to see our real marriage which is important to me. Them being able to see the moment when we first say our vows to each other. The very first time we hear each others, they get to hear it too. Thats far more special IMO.

For what's worth, in my country everyone has 2 wedding, the courthouse/mandatory one and the religious/reception one which is considered THE wedding.

I prefer cash, too, but it's not okay to tell people that. So, I guess there will be a small registry just to give people some ideas. We really don't *need* anything and the apartment that we'll be living in is 450 square feet, so there's not space for much, either. I just want people to celebrate with us!

I feel like I'm making progress with some of the small things. Yesterday I found a perfect strapless bra to wear under my dress, and today I found a slip/shaper thing, and they were both really affordable (not being from a wedding-specific vendor, and all). Also today I found a gorgeous dress that I'm going to wear as my "going-away" dress. (Oooh, I found it online! It's this one, in the "beet" color. But I got a much better deal!) Most of the weddings I've been to recently have the couple staying until the reception is completely finished and not leaving until the next day, but I really want to do the whole send-off routine, complete with a special outfit, rice/birdseed/bubbles, and car decor. It's silly, but I love it. We may head somewhere close overnight, though, and then come back for a brunch the next day to say our farewells to the out-of-town guests before leaving for the honeymoon.

Joy, we started registering for gifts but we haven't finished. I think we stopped when my fiancé asked if we could register for video games, lol!!

I'm waiting for my custom cake topper to be finished... The woman is taking forever!!

Haha re: video games! One thing we "need" (if it could be said that we need anything at all) is a TV. I have an antique mid-90s era one that has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel, and weighs approximately 866 pounds. Also I don't really own a piece of furniture that can support it at this point. But I'm pretty sure that's not the kind of thing you register for, nor do I think anyone would buy it for us. Oh, well.

Oh I understand. Sadly I have almost nothing in the US (except a bed, dresser, small things) because I always lived at home before coming here so we are gonna be scrounging for many things when we arrive. I am hoping my family members have 'old' things that they no longer want or need! Because you are right, you can't really register for those types of things! It's kind of weird. My sister and her fiancé aren't registering for gifts, but instead asking for money for their honeymoon (they are doing it through a website). They have been living together for awhile now, and she told me that all they need is a couch haha.

Love all your dresses!!

We are having a really intimate small wedding. We have always talked about that it will just be the two of us.

I have never dreamed about a big wedding and just the two of us (and our son) is all I want. Now, my family understands that it's hard to plan a wedding in this time. I can also not ask them to come to a wedding in the US in December or January with short notice. My fiance have a large family and then it would be impossible to "just pick a few" to come to the wedding. And then if we would plan something later, it's getting big. And we don't want that.

So, the point is. Our wedding will just be the two of us. We have been talking about the courthouse and then fancy dinner and hotel in the city we met. I have been thinking about getting a photographer, just so my family can see. We well see, we need to plan more! I have been looking at weddingbands (which we will buy in the US saving us a lot of money compared to Norway!) and I bought a dress. I wanted a short dress that I could use later. Bought it from nordstrom.com. It fits, but the fabric is more heavy than I thougt so it feels bridal and not like something I could really use later. Not that it matters, it's cheap for a wedding dress.

But now I'm thinking about getting a long dress....

In the VJ realm, we are all in the same situation. Regardless of etiquette, we are free and able to call whatever we are planning for our wedding, what we want to call it. Some people say courthouse, some say civil ceremony, some say wedding. You said the key phrase, WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO ME. The manner in which we are planning our special day is important to us, it is not going to look, and/or sound the same as your day, so GIVE IT A REST. BE HAPPY FOR EVERYONE HERE.

What do you think about a long dress for a court house wedding?

I have a short wedding dress and my wedding is in December. It really does not matter, are you happy in your dress. We had the same issue. Both from large families. Our mother's are trying to add people to our small wedding ceremony. We have planned for no more than 20 ppl, then it jumped to 50. We were like whoooo, nooooo. So we railed everyone in and said only these guests and the wedding party. End of discussion. Even with a small wedding, you still have to get everything completed within the timeframe. We are planning a December wedding. He does not really care what I am planning, but he keeps changing his mind about either a suit or a tux. :help:

I really like it! But you should definitely wear whatever it is you want to wear, regardless of location. I've seen photos from many people who wore traditional wedding gowns at courthouses: doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

He does not really care what I am planning, but he keeps changing his mind about either a suit or a tux. :help:

Aaron is quite interested in the plans themselves, but doesn't seem too bothered about whether or not he is the one choosing the bridesmaids' dresses, flower girls' dresses, etc. (in fact I think he'd rather not). The other day, though, he brought up what he and his (as yet unknown) groomsmen will be wearing, and was very worried because he doesn't own a suit anymore and wasn't sure if the other guys would. He was so relieved and excited when I told him about the whole concept of rental tuxedos here!

I've been sick the last few days, so not much wedding stuff happening, aside from some half-hearted registry construction. I was against having multiple registries, but then quite a few of the things we actually could use aren't actually available at Target, so I'm going to do Amazon also. I also made a wedding website: I'm thinking it will be very good for keeping everyone up to date on the latest information with a short-notice wedding like this. It even has an RSVP function (if you pay extra), which I'm thinking about using for the more web-literate guests: at the very least, at the save-the-date phase, to see how many people are planning to come.

Also, I've decided to forgo the "maid of honor" designation and call all of my attendants bridesmaids: that's not weird, is it? I don't really like the "BFF" aspect of appointing someone as a maid of honor, in the first place, and on top of that, there's not really an obvious person who would fit the bill. One is my oldest college friend, one is a good friend who's also Aaron's cousin, another is a newer good friend, and two are my sisters. If I had to pick, it'd be Oldest College Friend, but I'm not even 100% sure she'll be here as she lives overseas, and of course my sisters would not be pleased (not any more pleased than they'd be if I picked one of them and not the other). So...meh. Aaron's groomsmen are going to consist of Guy He's Met One Time Ten Months Ago, Guy He's Just Met, Guy He's Also Just Met, etc. etc. so calling one a "best man" is equally problematic. We can just use their *names* during the ceremony/reception if there's something they're supposed to do (hand over the ring, etc.). Maybe?

Joy, I don't think it's a problem to just use the bridesmaid/groomsmen titles.

I'm going to have a maid of honour (My BFF since I was 6 years old), but as of right now, Tom is not going to have a best man. His team consists of his one good friend for 10-15 years or so (our mutual friend down in FL, one of the reasons we met!), plus two of my friends (twins) that I've been buds with since I was 16 - they helped him carry out the engagement night and bonded pretty quickly while he was here in Toronto. But his good friend is not really ready to be a best man due to circumstances in his own life right now. He will probably end up being the one to walk in with my MOH, and therefore be considered the Best Man in theory anyway... LOL. But I think it's fine to just call him (and your attendants) groomsmen/bridesmaids.

I really like it! But you should definitely wear whatever it is you want to wear, regardless of location. I've seen photos from many people who wore traditional wedding gowns at courthouses: doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

I am not one big on the titles. I have been saying bridemaids, but technically my sis is maid of honor. My fiance is trying to get my sister to change my mind about pink to red. I am not budging on that. We are not registering for anything this year. I already have a home, and got stuff in my housewarming. My mom said to register anyway, and let people decide.
