The wall is also highly unlikely to be persued, if for no other reason than that it's not statistically an idea that is either popular or viewed as potentialyl effective.

Why not? The Berlin Wall worked quite well for 28 years. Might have worked longer if it didn't divide Germans from Germans.

Having said this, I am not anti-American. I just think it's absurd to expect that other nations will view any attempt by the US to mine it's borders as a friendly gesture and with its image already tarnished, for wahtever reason, this kind of thinking is not going to make it any new friends.

What if homeless people regularly broke into your house and stole from you and your family.

What would you do? Or would you worry about what people thought of you if you took drastic measures.. it's their right to try to break in and Americas right to keep them out..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

wat? of course Mexico doesn't benefit from Nafta.. stupid rules, can't export a lot of fruits, can't take their trucks inside USA cuz they are not 'according to standards', stupid fees invented by nafta.. Nafta has never benefited mexico.. thanks to Nafta Mexican cornfields are infected with that corn that its spores fly everywhere and if ur field got infected u have to pay the american company because its their corn now

Many countries have strict quarantine rules..

Actually the medical condition of illegal immigrants is probably another issue to consider. How many diseases are they introducing into the country? Everyone else has to go through medical checks to enter..

but still, nafta doesnt benefit the average joe.. sure thanks to Nafta all HP,Compaq,Emachine pc's are assembled in Guadalajara as ur Diesel, Donna Karan and CK jeans are assembled in Tijuana. but prices for a computer, although considerably cheaper than a few years ago, it's not as cheap as outsourcing promises

if they didn't have nafta the US could just tax the ###### out of Mexican imports.. Then what, nothing would get through..

Mexico's financial status is based on Mexican issues such as corruption, lack of leadership and anti-Americanism, to say the least.. I bet you if any other country from Europe or Asia was in Mexico's place on the map, below America, they would have a very high standard of living..

###### man the country is next door neighbors to a 300 million people consumer driven nation... If a nation cannot make money having that advantage, I rest my case..

well.. those aren't imports.. computer companies as HP-Compaq, or clothing companies like DK or CK, just get the mhh terminated product and then they just put an tag and a box and sell it in USA and re-export it to Mexico, so I don't see how could u tax them.. the other mexican imports, yes they are taxed, tuna fish is taxes even though is still cheaper than US.. fruit is tax and very expensive lol, other products mainly food all of them are taxed...

if US companies are in Mexico is because outsourcing, not because mexico exports HP computers to USA.. so without NAFTA those US companies would sell u stuff even more expensive i gues

and what would be the point of "nothing would get through"?? i dont think the free market or companies want something not to get through

I don't see a relationship between taxing Mexican imports and illegal immigration

I think you missed the point. Mexico is next to one of the worlds largest consumer markets. How is it even possible that it has not managed to benefit from this..

In terms of illegal immigration, a wall must be built. A wall is not the solution alone but a part of the solution..

My reply got a bit messed up, this is another interesting link.

For what is's worth, I don't think many people genuinely advocate such a ridiculous idea, which is also highly tasteless when you look at all the work that is currently going on in the world to rid areas of mines that have been placed during times of agression.

The wall is also highly unlikely to be persued, if for no other reason than that it's not statistically an idea that is either popular or viewed as potentialyl effective. Most people appear to believe that employer sanctions are the most effective way forward.

I think the analogies so far are weak...suppose this homeless person used your bed, ate your food and decided to to pawn your jewelry, then proceeded to tell their homeless friends that your house had a nice bed, nice food and they could also take your jewelry. Now it is not just 1 but every homeless person in the neighborhood helping themselves to what is rightfully not theirs, but yours. Oh and in the winter while they are away they tell even more homeless people of the wonderful bed, food and jewelry available and eventually during the warm months your neighborhood and home are overrun with a severe homeless problem.

Finally 1 dies in a driveby shooting and the entire homeless population sues you for not having a big enough house to protect them at nights!

You are correct when you state this "wall" will not be effective. It will not cover the entire border and as such one can just walk around it, as they already do the 75 miles of fence along the border and I am certain that people will point out how ineffective 700 miles of fence was (on a 2000 mile border) and call it a big waste of time and money.

Not related to this quote but the Berlin wall was mentioned, this is an inaccurate remark as it was a symbol of opression, it was designed to keep SKILLED labor from leaving and not unskilled labor from entering. For an example a wall keeping people out we need to look way back into world history....at the Great Wall of China or, more recently (if you will) Hadrian's Wall.

In terms of illegal immigration, a wall must be built. A wall is not the solution alone but a part of the solution..

well, main mexican xport products are fruits, vegetables and some canned products (as i said before, electronics and clothing are just 'assembled' here, they aren't considered Mexican).. and even though with Nafta, the US government manages to pull 'oh u know what, guess what happened' and some other lame excuse, because well, the mexican produce is cheaper..

most famous case, mexican tuna fish.. to sell it in USA u have to have the dolphin free sticker, Mexican tuna fish is cheaper by 40-50 cents per can. So this mexican ship got this freakin dolphin, which was the 1st they accidentally caught in like 2-3 years, so US govt said 'oh, u can't be dolphin free certified' just for 1 freakin animal..

most recent case, Mexican Coca-cola (the one in glass cases) was selling more in the US, the Mexican Coca Cola, fresca, Manzana lift were kickin the local Coke's distributors, so they decided to ban it just because, after 1 year its available again..

but u see, everytime Mexico wants to export something, US uses Nafta and conveniently 'finds' a clause..

case still debating.. CEMEX, Mexican Cement company, has been accused a gazillion times of dumping, cuz their product is cheaper than US Cement.. and of course, they don't have dumping policies, the product is just cheaper

My answer is still the same. In order to solve the problem, I have to address the issue of why there are all these homeless people and how they can be accomodated.

The alternative: to erect a huge electric fence and employ armed security guards at great expense to me. Unfortunately, this doesn't even work because I have only erected part of the fence and the homeless people are still there.

Suppose to take this analogy one step further, I was successful in creating a fence that was leak proof. Would I then be happy? To be honest, no, because the problem of the homeless people is still there.

I guess that is what you pro fencers believe, that the homeless people are always someone else's problem. Or, if you can't see the problem, maybe it doesn't exist?

and what's that mean really, Dean? I mean if PH's stance is that (s)he believes in giving of her/himself to help others...what's being done about it? is (s)he donating part of her salary (if working) towards an underpriveledged person? Does (s)he really open up her/his home to those in need? Surely, since PH feels so strongly, there ought to be more than just disparaging comments to us here about how sh!t America is.
