Oh, man, I have to vent.

I am livid.

My husband has an Associate's degree from an institute in Rabat. You all know how university is in Morocco... there are a few public universities, then lots of small institutes that give degrees as well. His degree is from one of these schools.

We paid to have his credits evaluated from Morocco and when he was in school in Europe, and they wouldn't recognize a single credit from the institute in Rabat. Not one. Because it's not part of the Ministry of Education or whatever.

I am livid, since that would literally cut off at least a year of tuition for us and there's no reason not to approve it.

Does anyone have experience with this? Does anyone have a better evaluator to use than what we did? We'd go through the process again if it means he'd get his credits recognized.

I need to talk myself down. First today, USCIS says they were wrong when they said our replacement GC (his 2-year GC had the wrong entry date, so we've been waiting on a replacement) and it might be another two months.

Now this with the credits. It's a bad visa-journey day. :(

Does anyone have any experience with getting credit from institutes recognized?

Thanks.

If his degree isn't from an international accredited institution (non-profit for the most part), is almost impossible for it to be approved anywhere else. That happens with institutions here. BEWARE! I always tell my students, if an 'university' is paying for advertisement on TV, more than likely you're screwed in many ways.

There are many reasons why not to approve it. All these bodies are trying to keep away the pay-for-diplomas type of institutions that are not accredited. It is really hard, furthermore, when it is a small institution that 'gives degrees,' just like you stated. That's exactly why there's red tape.

I'm sorry for your bad day today; I'm sure I didn't make it any better. Just have him enroll in an accredited (please) institution here. It'll be worth a lifetime!

Sorry for your frustration.

As far as evaluating, the only way to get credit recognized by most schools in the US is to evaluate it using the World Educational Service.

Their website is www.wes.org Once there, create an account and start filling details as required, you will be shown a big huge list of schools they recognize and evaluate, if your is not there that means almost no way to transfer the credit, but GOD willing you will find his schools over there.

Once you are done with that step, you will pick your package (most schools need course by course evaluation ), pay and send them the required documents.

Be aware that most schools wont transfer credits that are older than 7 years, and in some cases 5 years------------so be sure to inquire from the school he will attend.

Good luck

As pointed out, it is quite common for these credits not to be recognized from international institutes. It even happens here within the US.

There isn't much you can do except ask the school he is planning to attend if they have the examination to establish credit.

Not everywhere does it. But, basically, the exam establishes proficiency in the subject and if passed, he will receive credit for that course.

Think of it like him taking the final exam. Additionally, he has to pay for that exam.

Sorry for your dilemma, but it is not uncommon at all.

I m not very familiar with education system in Morocco but if it was from not accredited institute it would not be recognized, unfortunately that is the fact.

Moving here has its pros and cons and unfortunately this is a con, he might have to spend couple extra years in school here, which might cost a little extra but at end of the day it would be good place to make friends and build social circle.
