I just have a few questions

Since I have been married for 7 years and am just now applying for my citizenship - what box do I fill out on the form?

Been a resident for 5 years or married to a USC for 3 years?

I am sure I will be questioned as to why I left it so late. The reason is time! My family has been ill overseas and my life has just been so busy here looking after my children. Will this be used against me?

I hope not. I just want to make sure I am checking the correct box. I would just check married to a USC for 3 years because I have....well for 7 years!

Advice please!

You are not required to become a US citizen, it is not mandatory and it will not be held against you!

You can apply based on the 5 yr rule simply because it requires different (ie: less) evidence - there isn't much different on the application just that you are NOT trying to prove co-mingled finances after just 3 yrs of marriage. You have been married for at least 3 but apply based on 5 yr rule and there isn't a problem .

Good luck and enjoy!

In your case since you have been married more than three years and a resident for more than five, check the latter.

You will not be questioned as to why you are applying now, because there is no obligation for you to become a citizen, so this is as good a time as any.

It is a voluntary decision.

Congrats!!

As Stated by above members, it will not be held against you for not applying for citizenship sooner. Since you qualify under both conditions, you can choose to apply under the 3 year or five year blanket. But as mentioned, it will be easier to apply under the 5 year rule as you will have lesser evidence to provide. Good Luck!

I've been here 6 years... also married 6 years.. and I've just applied under the 5 year residency rule.

I've got 2 friends in the US who have been LPR's for over 30 years, and have never applied for citizenship. It's never been a problem.

I decided to apply under the 5 year rule, as it's a whole lot less documents to put together. I'd like to vote in the next election, that's why I applied now.

Thank you all so much!! Sorry for the late reply I haven't used the forum in a few years (as you can tell!) and I forgot to add the 'watch topic!'

Thanks again you are all so helpful :)
