I have to take ownership of the error - I somehow used the fee for the I-129 rather than the I-129F...

I would still contact them and get some sort of reference number or confirmation - or you may find it has been 'put aside'. You don't want it sitting around on someone's desk and lose time as can happen  - if you have confirmation of delivery you have something to go by. The sooner it is returned to you, the sooner you can fix it.

Made that same mistake the first time. When I called the service center, I was advised to just wait for the packet to get back to me instead of assembling a new one and putting another check for the correct payment amount. The USCIS website I used to check the status is: https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/Dashboard/CaseStatus.do states that rejected application do not retain their dates. When we got our packet back, it included a green sheet that we were instructed to put on the top of the package to signal them that this required special attention. All of the pages had annotations, which means they were touched or processed, so hopefully it processing will not take that long when they get it back with my check with the correct fee payment amount. Resent our packet back August 18. They received it August 22. So far nothing yet. Just waiting, waiting, waiting...

Good news! We received the G-1145, E-Notification of Application/Petition Acceptance on the 31/08/2012 after we quickly resubmitted.

Your case has been accepted and routed to the USCIS California Service Center for processing. Within 7-10 days by standard mail you will receive your official Receipt Notice (Form I-797) with your Receipt Number.

Crossing fingers for the NOA1 and then it's time to hurry up and wait.

Check cashed 8/20/2012! NO NOA1 received yet, but that is ok with me since they cashed my check!

Sounds like both of you are on your way!

Since you are now waiting, it may be a good opportunity to check out the GUIDES and start reviewing what you will need for the next phase of the process.

Good luck on your visa journeys.
