Georgia Summer Food Service

Program Description

The Georgia Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides reimbursement for free, nutritious meals and snacks served to Georgia children 18 and younger. These meals help children in low-income areas get the nutrition they need to learn, play, and grow throughout the summer months when they are out of school.

When school is out the meals served as a part of the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program are not available and due to families' limited budgets, or other circumstances, children will often miss wholesome meals. The SFSP fills this gap and parents benefit from some help in stretching their food dollars and by knowing that their children are receiving healthy meals in a supportive environment.

North Carolina Summer Food Service

Program Description

The North Carolina Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides nutritious meals to children who would normally receive free or reduced price meals when school is in session. SFSP helps children to maintain a nutritious diet and helps their families to stretch their food dollars during the summer months.

The program is offered in many and various locations such as parks, playgrounds, housing authorities, day camps, churches, community centers, etc. Often the SFSP meal service is combined with learning and recreational activities for the children.

In 2000, about 574,000 children in North Carolina were eligible to receive SFSP meals. However, less than 10 percent of this number were actually served. Therefore, the Nutrition Services Section is making every effort to publicize the program so that more organizations will sign up to become program sponsors.

I know, right? It amazes me what some people here are so against. Just when I think I've seen it all... I am once again surprised at how little some people here care for anybody else.

Indeed. Apparently their notion is that it would be wrong to do something for our own kids.... Go figure....

These people have no idea what they are talking about. They just regurgitate something someone else told them. Sheep, the lot of them.

But we're a very Christian nation, you know?

It's very Christian to wish death on a woman. Oh, and to starve children.

Some students if not given free lunch will not be able to eat at all.

There are numerous studies out that show that (big surprise!) children need healthy food to grow good and capable brains. School lunch and even breakfast for the extremely poor provides nutrition that these children would not otherwise get.

We can wish that people who can't afford kids won't have them, but they do. I think the best thing for a lasting solution is to feed them and grow their brains so these kids can stop the welfare cycle and be smart and get jobs as adults. I'd rather pay for some cheap lunches for a few years then pay for someone's house and food and living expenses for 50+ years.

Feel free to pay that then. There are plenty of non-government related charities to help out with this.

The government already pays for it, which means you pay for it too. Stop complaining.

The last time I checked this thread was about not spending money on the school lunch program, so complaints are quite welcome. After all, aren't you complaining here that they are thinking about taking it away?

This thread, that I started, was about how outrageous it is to propose not funding school lunches on a federal level. Maybe if you had actually read the contents of it you would know that.

I see, so you are complaining. Gotcha.

Why should you pay for a kids lunch in Iowa? Why can't Iowa take care of their own kids?

Because it should be dealt with at the federal level for reasons I have already stated. Go back and read.

Oh I read your reasoning, however your reasoning is based on an assumption that if the Feds don't get involved then it's going to be a program that's simply not healthy.

Also, school lunches when we were growing up had a mix of healthy foods and ones you listed that you might consider junk. The difference maker for us though was that we actually had a proper recess and excercise while in school, so we weren't fat. Not only that our parents told us to go the ** outside and play instead of playing on the Xbox and computer all damn afternoon/evening.

The food in schools have been fine for a very long time. It's the change in physical activity that has caused health problems for today's American children.

I agree with your exercise comments. However, I cannot agree with the food comments. Did you see Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution?

WIC gives out chocolate milk here. I've known of people giving the chocolate milk to their very young children. They get them while they're young and the bad eating habits continue their whole lives. It's really very sad. :(
