i also sent the original Birth certificate and marriage certificate to the NVC..i'm praying that they won't lose it

Ok

After messaging other couples from Romania it seems to me that this is one of those grey areas where the decision is up to the individual case reviewer. One Romanian couple filed the same as we did (copies of official documents that are officially notarized/certified by a government approved notary and translated) without any problems from the NVC while another couple was told that they needed to send originals. Both those couples interviewed the summer of 2011. Anyway we've done as much weekend research as we could here on visajourney and I've gotten some helpful input. I feel a lot less stressed :) I'll update later in the week when we get the final answer on sending originals or not.

@Jason/Shifa -If it is any comfort the one couple that I wrote to who did send originals said that they got them back at the interview without any problems.

Original poster here with an update.

Our lawyer spoke to the NVC and confirmed that yes, we have to send originals. This may not be the case for every country but it is in our situation (husband is Romanian). DHL'd the docs yesterday evening. They should be in NY by Friday morning. Thanks for the help everyone! Our journey continues :D
