HELP! Should I postpone my interview? I want to visit without activating my K-1 Visa!

I was super excited that the visa process has been smooth sailing for us so far. Everyone has been happening a LOT faster than we expected. I'm currently in the process of booking my medical appointment and my interview and I'm so glad that I didn't book yet. In my head I had planned to get my K-1 next month and then not activate it until early next year after Christmas. However, after reading this forum and learning that they stick pressure-sensitive adhesive K-1 Visa INSIDE my Passport, I realized that the border official would see it every time I go into the US. :o

We have a few trips planned between now and the end of the year to see each other and I want to spend Christmas with my family in Canada. I have 3 more planned trips to the US before the year is over (plane tickets booked and paid for - we love planning things in advance! ) Given my situation and my upcoming trips, should I delay my Visa interview until after all of my planned trips or will I be able to visit the US without activating my Visa? I have read the forums and understand that there is no guarantee...but I was wondering if anyone has any recent experiences with this? Since I haven't booked my interview yet, I do have the option of choosing a later date. Is there a rule that I must have my interview asap or can I have it in December?

Sorry for my rambling. I appreciate your help!! :)

Thanks, Claire! :) Well, luckily I don't have anything to "change" because I haven't actually booked it yet. I was waiting for the medical clinic to get back to me with available dates. I'm so glad that they've been taking a while. :D

Many conversations on this in the Canada Forum. Here's one of the latest:

This is not advisable when you are flying, but I do believe there was at least one person, recently, who had no problem doing this at Pearson. You can delay the process at this point by delaying your interview. you also have the option of asking them (at your interview) to issue the visa at a later date, and then send them your passport when you are ready to immigrate.

I am going to move this from K-1 Process to the Canada regional forum as this really is Canada specific.

Thanks, Krikit! I did read in the forums that you have posted many many times about this topic. LOL I was trying to post this in the Canada forum, but don't know how to do that. I've kinda just been posting in the different areas by chance...clicking on someone's post and then clicking "add a new topic". How do I post specifically in Canada?

VWP people problem no0pb.gif

I envy your position.

What is VWP?

LOL thanks - yes, I'd much rather be in this position than the other way around. :) Before getting my NOA2, I was starting to feel despair because my application wasn't even being "touched". It's a way better feeling to feel like you're in "control" :)

This may be covered in one of the linked threads above (sorry, didn't read them), but if you're going to delay your interview, you should delay the medical too. It has a 6-month expiry, so if you get it done now, you have to be sure that you will be able to POE before 6 months is up, or get a new medical done later.

The K-1 Visa journey for myself and my two K-2 children:

K-1: NOA1 2011-8-10; NOA2 2012-1-12; Interview 2012-4-24; Visa issued 2012-9-17; POE (Sarnia) 2012-9-26; Wedding! 2012-10-02
AOS: NOA1 2012-11-20; Biometrics 2012-12-14; AP/EAD approved 2013-1-11; Interview 2013-1-31; 2-yr Green cards in hand 2013-2-9 (101 days total)

ROC: NOA1 11-7-14; Biometrics 12-1-14; 10-yr Green cards ordered 4-13-15! (157 days total)

Counting down to naturalization time!

Krikit, any idea of the delay involved when you send them your passport and actually want the visa? Is it right away, a few days, a few weeks, a few months? I would hope that a second interview wouldn't be required.

what is the 1 word that comes to mind in dealing with mtl?? ----SLOW---- One would think it would be a simple thing, but not the case!! No a 2nd interview would not be required--but you can't count on a fast turn around.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
