Romney might have benefited from the 2009 tax amnesty - i.e. he might have been a tax felon that got away with it. Your average Joe might be upset and decide that Mitt isn't the guy he wants to run the country. I don't think it's about mere percentages and tax rates. If Mitt had paid tax rates similar to 2010 in the previous years, he would not take the heat and let the suspicion linger. There's something else in these returns that team Mitt feels is more damaging than the beating he takes for his secrecy.

An amnesty absolves one from the consequences of illegal activity. If Mitt benefited from the 2009 amnesty on undeclared off-shore accounts, by definition, he did something illegal. He would have committed a felony, to be precise. He would have gotten a "get-out-of-jail-free card" on that but I think that would completely sour his candidacy with the electorate. That's what this is about. Has he or hasn't he benefited from the amnesty? Only Mitt knows right now and as long as I don't know any better, I will assume that he has.
